According to sources, Ray Maguire of SCEE dropped this while thanking retail for their support as PS3 passed 1m units in the UK:

“Our momentum will continue with the introduction of in-game communication in the summer, firmware update 2.4 and the strongest line-up of games through our third party partners and our own studios. I’d personally like to thank our trade and business partners for helping us on the start of the PS3 journey.”

So looks like ingame XMB may be here for the launch of MGS4, that is if they keep to that, Sony wouldnt go changing release dates would they ?:D
Personally im not bothered when it comes out, isnt something im really waiting on.

In game communication doesn't neccessarly mean that the XMB will be fully accessible whe playing games though. I suspect it will just be a list of friends with the option to send chat invites, change channels, change volume etc. I would love it to be full XMB though, but I think that if they offer that then they'll be taking some valuable resources away from the main feature - the game.

im not waiting on it
but its one thing that WILL improve the overall user functionallity of the console

While i want this very much, i think if it comes out around the same time as MGS i'll end up signing out before i play it - i need my privacy! :D
