Ps3 just turned itself off and won't turn on

Sorry if there's already a topic on this, but I'm understandably in a bit of a panic. Was just watching something on my PS3 when it beeped three times, turned off and the red light started flashing. Turned it off at the back, back on, started up and it froze on the PS3 logo screen. Turned off again, back on and now it starts up for a couple of seconds and as soon as it sounds like it's accessing the disc drive (with my damn Firefly Blu-ray inside!) it beeps and turns off.

Anyone know what the cause is and more importantly, the solution? A quick search online suggests it could be overheating, or an HDD issue, or a power issue, or a disc drive issue, or anything else.

It's a 40GB console (with an upgraded HDD).

Thanks for any help, I feel sick thinking it's dead and taken all my data with it!

Sounds like you got the infamous YLOD.

Nothing you can do. Try get it on for a bit and get your disk out.

Even without an actual yellow light showing?

Eugh...I was hoping this would never happen to me, it's four and a half years old so I thought it was just going to soldier on forever!

Haven't seen yellow so far, so perhaps that's a good sign. I'll leave it be overnight and try it again in the morning, hopefully I can persuade it to give me back my Blu-ray if nothing else. Annoyingly it's been months since I did a back-up so I'm a but worried about how much data I'll be losing. :(

You should be able to do the heat gun rework trick it will work for a while maybe months, years, weeks who knows. I would try this and backup the PS3 and sorry to say prepare to buy a replacement.

I had the same problem last week and bought a repair kit on eBay. I followed the instructions and it worked for a few hours until it YLOD,d again, but it gave me enough time to get all my data off the HDD.
If you look at the 3 red lights you may notice it goes yellow for a split second hence the YLOD name.
If you are not upto stripping it all down to the mobo for the heat gun treatment I suggest you just sell it on,you'll get a little extra if the seal is unbroken.
To get the disc out try holding the eject button and then turn on using the back on/off switch

OK, managed to get the disc out but it does appear to be the YLoD; as it starts up, the green LED comes on, then the blue briefly, then as it cuts out a couple of seconds later the green flashes yellow for a second and then flashes red until I press the power button again.

Budge: What's this repair kit you speak of? I know I'm going to have to get a replacement console now, but I need to get my data off first because my last backup is essentially worthless, it's so outdated.

Sounds promising. My Mother has a heatgun and I'll be seeing her in 4-5 weeks, so I'll give it a go then. Bit annoying to be without the PS3 until then, but so be it.
