Just ordered a nice 160Gb drive for my PS3, im considering installing linux on it.
Heard good things about the ubuntu version but i see that yellow dog version now supports the wi fi. So which version do you linux Ps3 users use and did you have any problems with the install operation etc?

The 160 Gb is for the internal one, but thanks for the advice, already got a 500GB USB one shared between PC and my PS3. What keyboard/mouse combo do you use? Can i use a non BT wireless ones or just USB and Bluetooth ?

If you have a 500gb external, Whats the advantage of the larger size internal?

Not picking on it, It's an Honest question :)

No probs mate, it makes it more Elite :D
Just kidding I use the exteranl for backing up my data on my PC mostly, got a 160 GB partition for PS3 stuff. Cant be bothered to carry round my USB drive with my PS3 (its heavy enough as it is!). Thought id just increase the size of my internal drive and put linux on for a little play around, also may be a good idea for when Sony start there TV, movie etc download service this year. That may be tied to your console for some DRM reason or something, even though that would be a bit silly.

Fitted my new HD drive today, i wish my PC could format 160 Gb disks as quick as this( about 30 seconds!). Anyway after all the PS3 type stuff is on the disk i had about 140 ish left. Partioned of 10 Gb for Linux, the latest version of YDL 5.01 i think has the boot loader installed so no messing around with USB flash drives and the like. Put the Disk in selected install new OS and of it went, bit worried at first as screen was blank then after a few mins the Linux logos appeared, bout 30 mins later it was all installed and working fine. Not had any time to mess around with it but it looks quite good need to set up my wi fi so i can use Firefox with it, had a quick game of mahjong though. Very simple to setup and install was very impressed with how easy it all went as i have heard a few horror stories about it, and how much a pain it can be, but i had no probs at all.

Ok id be impressed when
1080p full movies are playable from harddrive or even 720p converted WMVs, ahh but that FAT 32 is it still limited with a 4Gb issue?

Something like Final Burn Alpha / MAME and allows full 1080p upscaling would be a real treat.

With already having a PC and it connected to a HDTV display like many whats the point in doing this yet? Really im curious?

well no real reason just having a play around to be honest, oh and i like playing mahjong and solitaire :D. Just trying it out see what i can or cant do, may have a play with some emulators see what i can find. Also

i read an article saying ubuntu is the choice now, believe it has wifi drivers (seeing as a linux driver, is a linux driver, is a linux driver kind of thing!)

The latest version of YDL also has Wifi drivers, reason i choose the yellow dog one is that the boot loader is on disk( easier install) , and all the extras on the DVD such as open office, firefox, etc. Both equally good so i have read but not had much chance to play around with it. I think the UBUNTU is a lot smaller download, YDL is 3.3 Gb!

Ubunti is only about 700mb, Iv got it and it seems good and was easy to install, just wish I could get it full screen at 1080p... I just get black border round the screen.

Does it include open office, firefox etc?
