PS3 lock up + 3 Bleeps

I bought a PS3 shortley before christmas and since then it's crashed/locked up about 5 times. Mostly it's happened on Uncharted 2 shortley after I've put the disc in the drive, but lately Battlefield has also started to crash. I should say that all my games are brand new and have no scratches on the discs. I'm going to phone Game tomorrow and see what they say. Should I expect the worst?

If I have to change my console, what do I do about my saved games?

has it got good air flow, they dont like being being in in hifi units, also are are the vents clear, try cleaning them out with a hoover. otherwise i'd take it back as its only gonna get worse

Plenty of room for air flow.

Doubt that it's got full of dust since Xmas, but try cleaning the dust from the rear vents. Small hoover works like a charm.

The PS3 always emits 3 short bleeps if ever the console freezes and is shut down using the front power button.

The problem is the frequency of these crashes. I only ever got game crashes when using the internet browser, or occasionally when I tried to open the XMB during something intensive like switching for 2D to 3D.

Being this new, I very much doubt that you have accumulated a hardware problem, or you have heat issues. A little bit confusing this one, to be honest.

try to repair file system and database

Step 1: Turn off the PLAYSTATION 3 by holding the Power button on the front of the unit till the Power light is red.

Step 2:

1. Touch and hold the Power button, you will hear the first beep, meaning the PLAYSTATION 3 is powering on.
2. Continue to hold the Power button and after about 5 seconds, you will hear a second beep, indicating the video reset.
3. Continue to hold the Power button and after about another 5 seconds you will hear a third beep and the system will power off (Power light is red).

Step 3:

1. Touch and hold the Power button, you will hear the first beep, again for the PLAYSTATION 3 to power on.
2. Continue to hold the Power button and after about 5 seconds, you will hear a second beep for video reset.
3. Continue to hold the Power button and after about another 5 seconds you will hear a quick double beep. At that point release the Power button. If you succeeded in activating Safe Mode, you will see a message on the screen saying, "Connect the controller using a USB cable and then press the PS button."

Movie icon
4. Connect a USB cable to the controller and the PLAYSTATION 3 and press the PS button to enter Safe Mode.
5. Then you will see the Safe Mode menu.

I apologise. I must have mis-interpreted.

I wasn't aware that there was a way to "rebuild" the file system. I booted into Safe Mode a few times, once out of curiosity, the others just for reference when troubleshooting for others. I presume that is where this option can be found?

Ahh, yes, just did a little research. I remember now. I think the only reason I used it was something to do with formatting the HDD.

Back up your game saves to a memory stick just incase anything worse happens, then take it back and get it swapped over.

If I do have to change it for a new one can I back up my files? I don't have a memory stick, only iPods, will the ps3 recognise them? Or should i buy a stick?

EDIT: I'll get a memory stick then, thanks for he replies people.

I managed to get it changed at Game today. I simply said it crashes randomly and resets, the assissant took it up stairs to test I assume, bought down a new one and headed back to the counter. I over heard him say that I was talking (insert swear word).

It wasn't really called for, I wouldn't bring back if there wasn't a problem with it.
Slightly annoyed seeing as I used to work there.

Anyway, I'm currently updating Battlefield with its huge 1.7gig patch. *Hopefully* this one will do better. Thanks for the replies guys.

Hmm don't take it to heart, seems all the game stores and their sister store gamestation stores I've visited (not very often anymore) have appeared to employed a certain number of 'know it all' types and quick to label idiots.. Shame as some of the folks working there can be quite helpful, its those like you just had to put up with that ruin it...

He'll have no idea how the machine performs in the the short time he tested, anyhow you got a new one - result.

Enjoy your PS3, and buy games online - cheaper..!! That means no reason to go to mentioned game store again. :p

I don't know about you, but it seems that my local GAME and Gamestation stores are full of polite young people. Don't know jack **** about anything more than how to sell a console to an idiot, though.

I just randomly lost all my sound while playing BC2. I had some sort of strange noise through the speakers for a split second then loss of sound. I hit the home button to exit the game, and it hung then restarted its self.

I;ve never had these sort of problems before with a console it's begining to become quite disheartening.

The sound is back now after it reset.

That salesman obviously thought you were lying, so gave you a console with real problems they had in the back:D

Have you tried taking it back and swapping it for an Xbox..? You get a better console that should work.:D
