afaik - linux under ps3 can only utilise 1 core, plus only 256mg ram and very slow IO. Unfortunately this makes it pretty useless for anything more than very basic use.

Plus 1 spe is disabled anyway and 1 is used for system security, so there is only ever 6 spe's avalible for software to use, even ps3 games can only use 6 spe's.

Isn't cell based on the PPC arch?

Yes.

This is too true I'm afraid... I've played with YDL 6 on PS3 for the last month... and it's just very basic. It is still very much an 'in development' thing so the future can still look rosy but for now it's ok for email, internet is seriously hampered by less than adequate flash support, and forget running anything at something resembling a decent speed (especially as there is no hardware graphics support).

It does however have lots to play with and is quite a good intro to Linux if you just want to try it out... but do set aside some time for it... you'll need it ;)

I was going to sell my PC as I don't use it for much these days but I think for now I will have to keep it until either YDL on PS3 seriously improves or I buy a laptop :D

I've not tried them myself but I've heard that there's a couple of multiple emulators available that do a modest job, depending on the quality of the roms of course.

I've found this place (http://forums.ps3bodega.com/) to be an absolute god send for YDL on PS3 info. The guy who runs it even has his own repository which is a very good source of additional rpms including emulators.

Unfortunately this is the truth, unless you completely trash the underlying sony OS and forget about ever playing games on it then it's a useless linux machine. Such a shame as it would be a steal otherwise compared to what real cell based machines cost...

Would I be able to use linux to stream a signal from the PlayStation Eye camera to my mobile phone via the internet?

(Sorry, I'm derailing the thread a little here)

I couldn't say, if it can access the camera then I don't see why not, I've only ever looked at it's potential as a encoding box really...

It looks like the Eye isn't supported properly in YDL yet. Also Windows versions of software to get the Eye working don't seem to have got there yet either... your probably best off picking up a cheap webcam and using that, if it's an option for you.

The reason I ask is because I want to set up a camera in front of my telly to stream the pictures to my phone, so if I'm at football and we score, or there's a dodgy-looking decision, then I can watch the replay on my phone immediately.
I'm impatient you see ;)

I tried setting it up on my PC through my TV card, but got nowhere, I'm just not savvy enough about streaming.

PC and tv card is the way to go. I'd do it with VLC on linux...

You do know that for a *modest fee most mobile phone operators now carry live tv packages including sport... could be a better option if a) they cover your games, b) you get 3g signal in stadium, c) you have the money :P
