PS3 Media Server Question....

OK, first things first....

My PS3 is connected to the internet via wireless, and has to be due to the position of the router.

My PC is also connected via wireless.

Obviously, The PS3 is set to 'connect to network via wireless' or whatever, in the settings menu.

The PC and the PS3 are next to each other.

My question is, is it possible to connect a patch cable between the PC and PS3 for streaming from PS3 media server and still be able to connect to the internet (PSN) wirelessly(sp?)??

Cheers

Nope. The PS3 will only use one connection type, either wireless or ethernet, not both.

Only real option would be to route the PS3 to the internet through the PC.

I think you mean to the Ps3

and this is what you need

http://tversity.com/

don't change any of the settings (or cables) on the ps3 as it will stream the way you have it - only thing you may have to do is allow tversity on the windows firewall

Fair enough! Cheers :)

Think this is just me not being clear.
PS3 Media Server is an app similar to Tversity, but what I was wondering is whether the PS3 would be able to wirelessly link to the router for internet access, and at the same time link via patch cable to PS3 media server running on the PC for streaming content.
It appears it can't :(

Cheers though :)

why do you need to connect the ps3 to the pc like that? ps3 media server will still stream to your ps3 via the wireless network

Probably wont have the connection quality for HD though. I would run a patch to your pc, and share the wifi on the PC for internet access on your PS3. This would, though a bit arse about face, achieve what you want. Higher lan speed for streaming while retaining your internet connection. Obviously your PC would have to be on at the same time to get a connection for the PS3.

Wireless is fine for steaming most HD stuff so long as you get a semi decent signal.

Only way you could use a cable for the PS3 is to setup ICS on the PC. Or I guess you could just switch the PS3 over to wired when you wanted to move stuff over, then back to wireless for Internet. For steaming though the wireless should be fine as said...

It is, I can run 1080p movies fine using TVersity and downloading from the PSN maxes out my 20mbit cable, but my PS3 is 4 metres away from my wireless router.

Terrible signal I'm afraid :(
PS3 is fine and I've never had any lag or drops, but the PC on a Belkin G PCI card only ever shows a connections strength between 2 and 3 bars (of 5).

Everything I've streamed, including some quite low quality music video's I downloaded years ago is choppy :(

And just to pre-empt the obvious solution, it's not my place so I cant move either the PC, or the router.

Thanks though guys.

no idea what a homeplug is?!?!? I'll google :)

EDIT:

(2nd EDIT, link removed)

They look too good to be true?!?!?! Anyone got experience of them??

You might want to loose the link it's a competitor. ;)

I used some manufactured by Solwise whilst at uni.

We had one in with the router, and then another two in bedrooms at the back of the house.

They worked flawlessly, and were more than good enough for playing online with the Xboxs and PS3s. :)

They might seem too good to be true, but they definitely work.

I have no experience with them, I saw them on TV once and I think the conclusion was that it depends on the wiring in your house if they work well or not.

Those Homeplugs can be hit or miss. Most will never see anywhere near their rated throughput, sometimes leaving you with a slower connection than a weak wireless signal. Not saying they don't work at all though.

I have My PC in another room and only have a cheap ass Usb dongle in my PC and my playstation and xbox 360 (which is upstairs and on the other side of the house) all manage a decent connection for video.
I would suggest looking at your PC's wireless connection as that doesnt sound right.

1080P over wireless is perfectly possible, though it is very sensitive to signal quality and you have to remember not all 1080P video is created equal ;). Bitrate can play a massive part.
