Just wanted to share an experience i've had with streaming to the PS3.

I previously had a PC - which i used Windows Media Player 11 streaming to stream to the PS3. Worked well, but didnt transcode so well so i just left it as it was and made do. I had tried nero home but found that a bit fiddly compared with media player

Fast forward a couple of years, and ive got rid of the PC entirely and now have a mac. I have a look around and everybody recommends

PS3 Media Server

its available for PC or for Mac, so i gave it a download.

And my word it is the best thing i've ever used. Required zero set up, just installed it, left it at defaults and gave it a whirl - played everything perfectly. Picks up straigh away on the PS3 and works wonderfully.

I tried to repeat the same experience for the Xbox, and without windows couldnt find anything that was free, and quite so awesome, so i'm using my PS3 as a blu-ray player, and my main media streamer too.

If you havent used PS3 Media Server before, give it a try. Its awesome :)

I ve always used tversity for ps3 but based on this thread, I ll give this ago. Does this transcode on the fly and does it handle mkv files plus subtitles? I ve always use to convert my mkvs to either vob or mp4..

worked straight out of the box with mkv files with subtitles

was well impressed :)

I downloaded it the other day on my MacBook and couldn't get it to work. Must just be me.

where did you get stuck ? i literally did nothing other than just install it and fire it up. It did everything else for me. Having said that i do have a slim PS3 and my mac is on OSX 10.6.4

helps that i've got a quadcore imac, the transcoding is almost immediate :) obviously streaming HD i've got a wired connection too.

why pay for connect 360 when ps3 media server works perfectly and is completely free ?

theres no room for chargable products in this sector imo.

Can't believe people use software to do this.

Windows 7 + DivX = done.

No transcoding, no CPU usage, no fuss.

because i wouldnt want to dirty my house with a copy of windows ;)

and we're transcoding MKV files because you have to. The PS3 / xbox wont play them so either convert them or transcode them on the fly.

Can't seem to get it to work? It doesnt find the PS3 for some reason.

Ignore that. Media Server was turned off on ps3... the shame :p

Do you have to upload files or anything or does it just create a link to the Hard drives?

on the mac it automatically shares your entire drive :)

yeah thats the wireless that struggles rather than the software. I have my router on the window ledge and a cable going to the PS3 and the Xbox, streams 1080p HD no problem.
