Ok heres the problem (or not) someone at work wants to buy my old 60Gb PS3 off me for £250, this includes my 160GB HDD. Looking around thats not a bad price and ill have plenty enough cash to get an 80gb with the money from that and some old games ill sell him. Ive not used the PS2 emulation for nearly a year now, I use the card readers quite a bit but have a couple of card readers about, and have no use for SACD. So the dilema is, he isnt going to wait for ever for me to sell it, probably only a week or so, but its a great price IMO. The problem is do I buy an 80GB PS3 now or wait till the slim comes out mid August/September, i guess i could get an 80GB and trade it back in (for less money) when the slim is out. One more issue is if the slim is out September time im sure the 80GB price will drop by at least £100 to clear the channels August, so i will be losing out that way as not only will i have paid more for it i will get less trade in. A few options i have that may or not work is that,

Keep my 60GB until nearer the time (hoping they dont announce PS2 emu for all PS3's) get less money for it but not run the risk of it costing me more to get a slim in the long run.

Sell my PS3 and sit on the money till it comes out, not sure if i could wait 2 months without a PS3, sure i can still game on my 360, wii and PC but ill miss my BDs and PS3 games.

Sell my PS3 get an 80gb now trade in games for credit etc etc then get slim when it comes out and trade in 80Gb, but after a month or so use it will be worth less than half i paid for it.

It all depends on the rumours of the slim happening soon to be correct, which in most Sony type things seems to be true as they seem to be leakier than a cheap babies nappy.

True it dont make much sense to basically downgrade to an 80Gb, but im not really after an 80gb just the slim when it comes out. The less power and being cooler and even quieter is a bonus but like i said its mostly to get a slim.
As for it being confirmed or not, on listen up they have heard that its going to be tied with Madden in the US for August, they had the PSP go info pretty much spot on. Also on Podcast beyond ( BEEYOOOONND) they let it slip about the slim existing, and not in there jokey way, there is also plenty of evidence of at least a price drop coming soon. Plenty of US shops have done bundles that have sold out, reports of less than 6 weeks worth of PS3 in the channels etc etc. It all looks pretty likely to be happening soon and Sony has a 3 hour  conference planed for GC in Germany in a few weeks time, maybe they will announce it thier like they did the 80GB and 160GB the year before.

My ps3 still works fine (touch wood) i took it apart and did the HSC stuff a while ago when i was fixing another console, would feel a bit poo if it died on him in a few weeks time though. I may exchange it in that shop for £190 and he can buy it from them for £250 with a 1 year warranty if it does go wrong, may help with my piece of mind i guess. I can sell the 160GB for £22 there so i would have enough to get an 80GB from there without spending much cash, then trade it back in August time. Im pretty busy at home at the moment and dont have much time to game, looking to move into a new flat in a month or two, so probably would spend my free time looking at places and playing Civ 4 on the PC and could play catch up on my 360 games for a while.

What's the HSC stuff then? I took out the 3 year extended warranty when I bought it from a high street computer games store.

Not sure I want to tamper with the anti-tamper screws....

No worry if you have the extra warranty TBH, the HSC is heat sink compound, they use some cheap crappy stuff i removed it and replaced it with artic silver.

I was under the impression the 60GB where a better build quality and most of the problems people now have are from the newer models?
Loud fans getting stuck in high mode, bluray packing in etc

Most of the problems were down to a batch of 40Gbs having a naff BD laser, the 80GBs seem to be far more reliable than the 40GBs. Seems like the 80GB and especially the 160GBs are far better built as the manufacturing processes have been refined and the die shrink on both Cell/RSX.

Well my day 1 PS3 has gone now :( i got 260 with some games and my old 160GB HDD, decided to trade it in and told my friend at work to get it from there. I now have a not so shiny but new 80GB PS3 with Ghost busters and Infamous, worth nearly £ 50 if i trade them in again so not so bad. Going to miss my 4 usb ports but i got another DS3 rather than my old sixaxis spare controller. Now im expecting a £100 price drop in a few weeks time and the slim to be out sooner rather than later though, hope whoever does a good trade in program from 80GBs to Slims lol.

What's the point in selling your superior PS3 for another PS3?

That's how I'm looking at it anyway! I'd never get rid of my 60GB.

I'd wait!

EDIT - NOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

One years warranty is a biggy, mine seemed ok but if it was to die it would cost me £145 for a replacement, the YLOD repair in some cases isnt a permanent repair. So the least i would spend for a "new" PS3 is £145 even then you only get a 90 day warranty (i think?) so me getting a new PS3 for only £40, gaining £10 if i trade in the two games seems to make sense. I said earlier that BC is not an issue nor is loosing the 2 USB ports, BC looks like it may make a comeback via software and i have a spare USB hub if needed.

Incorrect. Sony repair out of warranty PS3s for £99 which also gets you a refurb 60GB if it is not fixable. (If you haggle you can reduce this figure as well). Also they give you a 12 month warranty (again you have to haggle a bit on phone and sound upset that your life and joy has broken down, 3 months is standard).

Selling a 60gb, then buying an 80gb, then getting a slim when it comes out will mean you have spent more than £145, of this I am certain.

If you don't care about BC give me all your PS2 games please.

Edit: Did you trade your 60gb for a 2nd hand 80gb? £260 seems like a ridiculously high amount of cash for an out of warranty 60gb (so ridiculous I would probably trade mine tomorrow if I could get that much cash for it!!).

rp2000

£157 for PS3, £24 for rock band 2, £ 24 for Infamous, £22 for 160GB drive, £18 for MGS3 Subsitence, Alone in the dark and a few old PS2 games made it up to £260 all cash. would have been more for trade in, only fly in the ointment is my GF has called me to say dont get a PS3 from town as she has 15% off at the moment and her supermarket has them in stock DOH!

I thought my old 60GB was quiet but the new ones dont make a sound, I could hear my fan running on the old one after an hour or so but i havent heard my 80 fan at all yet. Only thing i was surprised at is the little PS logo dont spin round anymore :( how cheap is that! :D
