Not sure if this should be in here or in the network section, but here goes.
Nothing major probably me just being picky. When i log into my router and hit the devices attatched. I see my laptop name, I also see my Iphone name but the PS3 shows as unknown. Now i would like this to show as PS3 or whatever i set it to. But how do i go about doing this?

Thanks.

Ok thanks for your help guys, think i will have to just put up with it hehe.

As MRLOL said, it is because a NETBIOS name is not broadcast by the PS3. You can probably get around this by defining a reserved DHCP address on your router for the PS3. This will probably let you give the device a name. Depends on what brand router you have. Netgear usually work like this, off the top of my head.

Hmmm how do i do that? I have set the PS3 in dmz mode on the router and given it a static ip address.

Also its a netgear router

Set your PS3 to DHCP. On the router go to LAN setup (or something like that) and reserve an IP address for your PS3. It will ask you to give a name for this, pick "my ps3". In your DMZ settings put whatever IP address you reserved in the DHCP settings. Now (I think) in the attached devices settings you will see correct name.

I am not 100% on this as I have a non standard firmware on my current netgear router. Worth a try if you really want to see the item listed in a recognisable way in your "Attached Devices" settings. Worst case scenario revert back.

Hmmm ive done all this and its still showing as unknown. Both my laptop and Iphone show there names..

my iMac, my macbook and my PS3 show up as unknown on my router

because they don't have netbios names.

Same here. I think on Macs there is a way to set it as I am sure when I used to have Leopard I made them show up (maybe by editting a system file or a terminal tweak). Never bothered since I got Snow Leopard.

Most of my devices are using DHCP with reserved IP addresses so I can see which is which anyway.

in theory you can configure it in network settings

THere is one in there, but my router doesn't pick it up for some reason. Never really bothered me that much.
