... or does the ps3 network suck compared with xbox:live?

I know I'm probably gonna get a ribbing for this but here goes ...

I'm forever (all of 2 days) being kicked off the ps3 network
Resistance FoM update stops at 98% (Network Error)
As far as i know you can't invite friends to matches
and its really slow, even the online store is slow?

I'm on 2mb broadband, so I don't think its my internet.

I hope these issues are just because the servers are really busy!

Has anyone else had these issues?

btw, the love everything else about the ps3 :D

resistance update is getting hammered just keep trying, I am sharing a 2mb connection and online element is sweet no lag at all in rfom or motorstorm

The MotorStorm server just went nuts. It seems they only have a capacity for 512 people in the English lobbies! How bonkers is that?

I had to join the Australia/NZ server to have a go in the end.

I agree.

I'm sure I'd be a little ****** off if I had chosen a PS3 over a 360.

As I do have a 360, the relatively poor online portion of the PS3 is merely a minor niggle rather than a major annoyance.

Still don't say how people can moan about a free service, i have LIVE also and would still pay for it for some of its features but Sony's is free and it still does its job very well regardless, miles better than the PS2. I expect there is plenty of people out there who will be very pleased with the online side of things, it certainly never put me off

They moan because the comparison will always be made with XBL, and rightly so.

Yes it's free, but when your direct competitor offers features that you don't, people are going to be unhappy.

then they are stupid, you pay for one and the other is free, you get what you pay for, i'm more than happy with both ATM, if i never had LIVE i'd be more than happy with just the PSN, now if MS said LIVE is going free (which they could do and gat paid by sponsers and advertising) then yes it would be time to moan and could be a potential killer for SONY unless their HOMEservice is as good as they say it'll be (which i think is what they are worried about hence the announcement of HOME)

I think this live vs PS network is like NHS vs Private health care, the NHS is free (kinda) it serves its purpose, most people moan about it, but it does it job. Private cost you money but the service is better, quicker and has more extras. I know that this is not a perfect comparison, but its one i kinda like.

Why? The comparison will always be made between the functionality of the two which in this case has the PS3 some way behind the 360. If you want to excuse the PS3s online component because it is free that's fine, a lot of people are not prepared to do that, much in the same way that a lot of people are not prepared to excuse the £425 price simply because it has Blu Ray.

Me too.

hopefully when HOME is released it will address a lot of the issues raised here. Take away all the bells and whistles and there should be some pretty good functionality added - I would imagine some of this functionality will be added to the XMB interface so you dont need to use HOME if you dont want to.

It would be good to have an OcUK lobby where we could all meet up. Maybe there couldl be 'this week only' adverts dotted about the place ;)

Yes they are stupid because sony are two half-assed to do a proper live service - knowing that their major competitor e.g. microsoft have a superb service. Sony have had ages to test live. When I new demo comes out on Live it will get hammered, but I still get it in under 10 minutes most of the time as their service is pretty damn good.

BTW - Has anyone seen the tour around the XBL HQ? It looks bloody amazing - especially the server rooms.

The thing with live is that it knitts each game together. It provides a standard base for every multiplayer game to be based on - which is great because then you don't have to rely on dev's designing their own stuff and multiplayer engine/friends list etc. I can happily host a game and then dish invited out to my friends, which is great.

Neither online service is a killer app - its good to have and each has approached in a different manner (just like the design of the console themselves) and in my mind even when Home is released its more likely to be a grower rather than an instantly massive hit

To my way of thinking as its a pretty new service for Sony (in comparative terms of how many will use it on the PS3 compared to pre release via ps2) I think they made the right choice on it being a basic but pretty functional service with just a few items to choose from so that no-one hogs the bandwidth while others get refused connections (Sony could have done better with notification of this however)

I am also disappointed that you cant do any downloading while doing f@h and playing a standard dvd - both things cause background d/l's to pause for me (even though I updated to 1.6 firmware straight away)

I can appreciate blu-ray playback causing this, but f@h is meant to take only the "spare" capacity rather than actually stop it working completely I thought, and I wouldnt have thought dvd playback to be too taxing either - but hey ho
