PS3 noise levels?

OK.. a genuine question..

My PS3 is not as quiet as I remember my brothers being..

My room is approx 23-24 degrees with all my Home Cinema kit going and the doors shut (light control measures!).. and my PS3 seems a bit, well, er, 'noisy'..

After an hour of a film, it really cranks the fans up to something approaching 360 noise levels...

Is this normal?... When I had my brothers Jap PS3 on loan, it was much colder in the room, and I had a very noisy SKYHD box that would have masked the PS3's noise, but I swear it was much quieter..

The noise from mine is probably more noticable than my Xbox360, though it may be that I'm used to my 360's noise more and am able to blank it out, or perhaps it's the tone of noise?

As for heat, my PS3 is miles hotter than my Xbox360 ever gets.

Mines is whisper quiet, i honestly don't know when it is on or off. The only time i hear it is when i am folding, it makes an odd noise, it sounds a bit too high a frequency to be the fan, but it most likely is.

As for heat, mines is horizontal and next to the vents on the right hand side (Top if it is vertical) then yeah it gets hot around there. But tbh i am glad it does as it means they are serving their purpose.
The 360 can heat up a room, but as for the hot console i honestly dunno cos the vents are at the back, plus it is sat on a Sky+ box so wouldn't be a fair representation for the poor wee thing lol though i am shocked it hasn't melted because of that yet.

id say mines pretty quite, i havent had it in a small enclosed space though, all the rooms its been in have been quite open plan. but yeah little hot not very noisy.

Generally mine is silent when turned on, then after 15mins to 30 mins the fan will start, which is about the same volume as a quiet PC. The machine is always silent when turned on. Even if it has been on for ages, if I turn it on and off I get silence again for a while.

I assumed everyone has a silent one and then the fan kicks in after a while. Is mine behaving "normally" compared to others?

Mine does the same. Whisper quiet for about five-ten minutes, then the fan kicks in and you can hear it. Not as loud as the 360 but as loud as my PC.

That's bad! So you're saying the fan speed is based on the length of time that the PS3 has been on and not the CPU temp?

Cheers, it sounds about right... I'll move it to a cooler room to see if it's just our incredibly insulated front-room.. it does get mid 20's without heating on in this sort of weather.....

That's what I thought!! Maybe the cpu temp monitor takes a few mins to kick in? I am certain it is working as if I load up Folding@Home the fan kicks in almost instantly. Weird.
