Hi there,

Just got my new PS3 40Gb and after hearing my brothers 60Gb at Christmas I was surprised that mine was quite a bit louder and seemed to have a slight clicking noise coming from it. Its not mega loud or anything, just louder than the 60Gb one I heard.

Is this the HDD (which could be replaced i suppose) which would explain the difference in noise ?

Has anyone else noticed this or is it me being too picky again!

Only played Singstar at the moment (g/f choice......honest!) but do have Uncharted to have a go at tonight.

Thanks

Mine is a 40gb and was amazed how quiet it was. Gets slightly louder after around 10 mins but no louder than my slimline PS2 which is very quiet. The clicking noise is I think the internal fan, mine clicks slightly but nothing anoying and I am very noise sensitive. The HD should not make any noise apart from when it reads data but even then it should be very quiet.

My friend has an 80gb model and mine is quieter that his. I thought the 40gb models used the new gpu's that used less power so should be quieter.

Thanks for the reply

Yeah, I don't think its anything to worry about really, just hate any noise when I'm watching a film. To be honest its so much quieter than my 360 that I don't even think I'll notice when I'm playing a film/game. It'll be hooked up to a 5.1 setup once I get another optical cable.

Good to know its not just mine that clicks a little.

Now to test a bluray film out and feel the HD goodness!

Thanks

As long as it's quiter than the 360 (not hard though) then your fine. For a next generation system I think Sony have done a great job with the noise level. That's one reason why I didn't buy a 360 was because of the noise so you could imagine how happy I am with the PS3.

You shouldn't hear any noise over watching a film, if you do then there may be an internal issue.

Anyway, enjoy the console.:)

My laptop clicks and screeches ten to the dozen and it's fine. I think when it starts CLUNKING you have cause to worry. Besides, you'll still got 12 months of lovely warranty left.

Personally I would swap it, I too am quite sensitive to noise, I guess, so it would annoy me. Even if the HDD is the culprit I would return it, as it is never good for it to be clicking really. I cannot hear the HDD on my 60gb model and I sit approximately 3-4 feet from mine.

Hmmmmm, i'll give it another try tonight and see how I get on. Thinking about it , the noise could well be a fan as its clicking even on the dashboard (not sure what the PS3 version is) and its not a harsh click if you know what i mean.

I had enough problems getting the thing anyway, so am a bit reluctant to send it back just yet, unless i could replace it directly with Sony.

New stuff, don't you just love it !

Thanks

Believe me the slight clicking will be the internal fan. If it's that same noise I have which I think it is. If it's a fast slight ticking noise then there's no need to worry as I have the same thing on my system and it's very similar sound to my slimline PS2. If it's fairly loud and inconsistant then it maybe the HD but you say it happens when the system is idle as well.

Don't worry over nothing. :)

Sometimes when I watch a dvd after a certain amount of time (from 10 minutes to 3 hours) it starts up like a jumbo jet. Its happened about 4 times but it never happens on games very strange.

Thanks guys

Ticking is exactly the description Black Dog so thanks, think I'll just play the games and try and chill out !

Thanks for all the help

Hmmm, just went for lunch at my brothers and had another listen to his with my ear right against it and it was pretty much silent with no ticking, clicking or anything.

Might give Sony a call just to reassure myself or try and swap mine with his when he's not looking!

Man I wish I'd got the 60Gb version when I was first thinking about the PS3!

If it was just as a games machine then i wouldn't have a problem with the ticking, but since its primary use is going to be as a media player (from PC) and Bluray films, then quietness is pretty important.

I thought that since the 40Gb ran cooler then any noise would also be reduced as any fans would run slower etc.
