PS3 not reading any discs

My PS3 is playing tricks on me. Firmware been regularly updated. Today it won't read blu ray, DVD and PS3 game discs, otherwise media center works etc.... I tried a quick restore and that didn't do anything - weird thing is that when I did that and went to update system, it said sytem is already updated. I would have thought a restore would have restored it back to original state I bought 2 years ago.

Anyway now trying a full restore - it takes 2 hours 36min to do :eek:. Fingers crossed. If that doesn't work looks like I will buy a dedicated blu ray player - probably the Pioneer BDP 320. tbh I rarely played PS3 games and I don't like the look of the PS3 Slim and no way in hell I am paying $150 (or equivqlent) to get it fixed - i guess it will die a slow death as media center.

Anyone had this problem?

Damn crappy console nowadays - I have had many consoles since the 80s and the only ones that died on me were the Xbox 360 and this half dead PS3.
 
Depending on which PS3 it is a BD repair kit consisting of a new laser etc can be found online for between £45-£65, seems to be a pretty easy fix.
 
Probably knackered drive.

For info, restoring won't remove the firmware updates, only stuff that is on the HDD / System settings.
 
Thx - is this just the laser?

I have the blue light when i put a disc in, I just don't hear the drive spinning and the "CD/DVD/BR" icon doesn't show up on the PS3 menu.

PS: is there anyway to restore back to original factory setting? I am wondering if that last december firmware could be the issue

Its the laser just get a new one for around £40 and DIY fix it yourself if out of warranty. Common fault on PS3's as Sony had a dodgy batch of Blue laser lenses.

Easy to fix but finding a spare laser lens in stock maybe tricky......
 
just called Sony and they told me £102 to fix - honestly am pretty annoyed since this problem seems to have happened to quite a few people. I was annoyed when I had the RROD on my xbox but at least Microsoft took care of it. Sony just doesn't acknowlege any issues - the goon I was talking to on the phone was telling me that the internet stuff was rubbish and that they sold over 2.5m units in the UK and there is no problem - basically implying i am a liar or a fool.

I asked to be called back by his superior, doubt that will change anything. Correction one thing has changed I am never buying a Sony product again. This is the second time I have dealt with their unhelpful customer services - last time was in 2003 concerning a Vaio I bought - the good thing is that made me curious about PCs and thus began the interest of DIY.

Anyway now I need to find a blu ray player quick -> hesitating for Pioneer BDP 320, although I think new models are iminent and maybe they will be quicker to load?

happened to mine as well. didn't bother getting it fixed, so sold it for 100 quid, and got a 360 for 140 with 3 games. there is a fault with some of the lasers, so sony flat out denying that is a load of rubbish. i had the exact same conversation as you probably had with sony on the phone.

they were also pretty un helpful to me too.
 
Yeah, had this happen to mine, but as mine was an import I had no choice other than to try and repair it myself. Bought a laser from the auction place, and when that came I found some instructions on the net and 30 mins later was back playing.

Hmmm i have a 40gb model CECHG03 and I can't find any kits specific for it. Anyway it will probably be replacing a faulty laser with another that is probably just as faulty - all their warranties are 3months so it doesn't inspire much faith. From having read all the issues online I think it was just a poor design from the start - so will pass on DIY tbh

You don't need a kit just the actual laser lens which used to be around £40 but they are always in demand so finding one instock for a reasonable price can be tricky. I was lucky that Sony fixed my launch model for free and gave me a brand new PS3 as it was before Sony realised that it was a bigger issue than just a few randoms failing here & there ;) which is why they now play hardball with repairs :(
 
My brother's PS3 60GB (launch) console had the laser failure last night.

Anyone bought a replacement laser lately? I've seen the procedure but all the places sell them want 65-80 and they don't exactly look reputable :o
 
I'm currently on my third laser for my Japanese 60GB. The process is fairly straight forward, bought the current laser unit from a guy on ebay for £55 inc postage.
 
bought a pioneer blu ray player in the end :) i was only using the PS3 for streaming, which I can still do.

decided not worth spending £50 on a replacement laser, since they only come with 2 months warranty and it seems these replacements dont last very long according to many (they seem to suffer the same fate as the lasers originally fitted in the PS3) some lasted only 26hrs :eek:

I also killed the drive sensor wire when taking it apart - i pulled a little hard on the wire as it was hard to remove :o

anyway I can always buy a new PS3 when there will be a PS3 exclusive game that is actually worth it - I can't see that for any time soon - GT5 may be that time

Try HERE - got mine from there. No problems, very friendly & good comms.

Edit: Oops - Out of Stock. It's the KEM-400AAA he'd want.
