Evening all, it's a sad day but my 80gb PS3 seems to have developed a fault.

I was installing the data for ME2 when it got stuck at about 76% for ages, with no audible activity from the drives. After a reboot my PS3 will now not read, or even recognize a game disk, blu-ray, or DVD. I've tried to do the Restore File System fix (http://community.eu.playstation.com...ng-disks-there-may-be-a-solution/td-p/6086723), but had no luck.

Is it new PS3 time?

Right, the only other info I can provide is that when a disk is inserted (of any type), you get no disk spin up, yet the clock on the screen (top right) keeps spinning as if it's loading/working. That's all the info I can provide, hopefully someone can tell me if it sounds dead, or fixable (for a worth while amount less than the cost of a new one).

Many thanks in advance.

Sounds like the laser has died mate. How olds the unit? try phoning Sony see what they say.

November 2008. My copy of ME2 has a small scratch across it, I guess where the laser dragged across it:(

Think I'll just get a new one, I see the 160gb slims are £196 everywhere at the moment. I figure repair costs would be about the £120 mark, had a fair bit of use out of the old girl now, time to get a younger model:p

Got a new 160gb one from PCW for £177:eek: Reserved it online for £196, then when I got to the store I noticed they're doing 10% off games and consoles. They were a bit reluctant to give the extra discount at first, but I kept asking (nicely I add:)), and they gave in.

Just got to transfer over my data now, and we're back in business!

You could have bought a replacement laser for around £50 and fitted it yourself, I did mine not long ago.

More money than time at the moment, may well repair it later. Didn't want to wait a week+ to get the new laser, then have the time to do it. At least now I've got a back up PS3!

Much prefer my old gloss one though, this new slim one looks a bit pants in comparison, although it is quite a bit quieter.
