PS3 official headset problem!

The official PS3 bluetooth headset i ordered a few days ago arrived and i was hoping to set it up and be playing with it within a few hours but i have a problem...

I can't get it to pair AT ALL!

I've read the manual several times and searched google to try and find a solution but still unable to pair it to the ps3. My PS3 version is at 2.80.

If i try automatic pairing with the USB dongle it just shows the red light (failed pairing/time out) i try seeing if its found under the manage bluetooth devices tab with it still plugged in and i get the same old "There are no bluetooth devices registered do you want to register a device"

Then i attempt to register it through the bluetooth scanning function, it scans and finds it, i input the pass key and then i get a screen "Registering please wait" and it stays on that without ever registering the headset.

I restored all the system settings to Default, restarted and reconfigured my internet/theme/display settings then attempted again and the same problem occurs. Other annoying things are it likes to disconnect my controller when doing most of these things (bluetooth interference?)

I have no problems setting it to scanning mode and it is fully charged i left it in there for 3 hours before starting to try and pair it.

Is the thing just broken or have i missed something?

Edit: Just tried pairing it with my mobile phone and it paired and connected almost instantly with no problems so now im completely stumped. (still can't connect to ps3)

Don't know if you were aware but when pairing up the headset with your PS3, make sure you have the usb cable connected directly to the headset and not the charging stand. It won't pair up if connected to the charging stand.

Oh yeah forgot to mention that, yes its the headset itself i've been plugging the usb cable into and not the charging stand.

Edit: Everytime i try pair it using automatic mode, it goes red for 2 seconds, then green for 2 seconds, followed by a flashing green. I assume this means that it IS paired, yet no information is displayed and it is still not recognized by the ps3 under audio or bluetooth settings. (also turns my controller off when pairing)

Perhaps its a problem with my ps3 registering the things? I'm pretty unsure what to try next and the headset itself seems to work just the PS3 dosen't want to register it at all.

Next silly question - you are running official Sony firmware 2.5 or above?

EDIT: Sorry - you already say you've got 2.80.

So when you switch the device on, do you not get the little on-screen indicator in the top right of the XMB saying HQ / battery life?

Nothing at all..

I turn my ps3 on plug the headset in, red for 2 seconds then green for 2 seconds (paired?) Then my ps3 controller turns off. I press the PS button on my controller to reconnect and check the bluetooth/audio settings and find nothing registered. The headset itself is flashing green which is the standard on setting. If i then try plugging it back in through the usb it just shows red for 2 seconds and then off.

If i then try putting it into pairing mode and searching through bluetooth settings it will never find it. Turning the PS3 off and back on and setting the headset into pairing mode without it ever touching the usb it will find the headset. Then after inputting the pass key it goes into "registering device please wait" The headset goes from the alternating red/green lights (pairing mode) to green for 2 seconds (paired?) my controller turns off, PS3 stays on "registering device please wait" screen for good. Pressing the PS button to turn my controller back on and exiting the screen it shows the "cancelling" message and then freezes there. I can hold down the PS button and shut the system down but nothing else from this point.

I tried it with my phone and it connected first time no problems.. Is it a PS3 problem with the bluetooth connection? Is my controller supposed to turn off everytime i attempt to pair it? I don't have any other bluetooth devices activated in the room bar the controller and the headset (my phone is never on bluetooth mode, only tried it to test the headset)

One more thing, i dont think i have a problem connecting multiple controllers to the PS3 as i remember playing vs my brother on SF4 when i first bought it and he brought his controller round for 2 player.

These are what im given when i access the bluetooth/audio settings menus.

Audio Device settings:
Microphone level: 3 (greyed out)
Input Device: Do Not Use
Output Device: System Default Device

Nothing can be changed.

Manage Bluetooth Devices: There are no bluetooth devices registered. Do you want to register a device?

It is weird. Your gamepad shouldn't switch off. Have you tried pairing the headset with the gamepad OFF? Another thing to try - plug both the headset and the gamepad in via USB cables simultaneously and see if it pairs in that scenario?

Yes i tried earlier by switching my gamepad off connecting and turning it on and same problems.

The idea of both being plugged in i haven't tried. I just attempted it and the same problems occur, the only difference being with the controller plugged in it no longer switches off. Still nothing showing its been recognized on the PS3 side. Tried the bluetooth scanning way with the controller plugged in and same again, controller didn't turn off but still stuck on the "registering please wait screen".

Looks like you should try to get a new headset to start with. Can you send it back to where you bought it and ask them to send another?

Yes i'll prepare it all now since it only just arrived today shouldn't take long to mail back and get a replacement (hopefully).

How have you got on?

I notice when I plugged my new one in today, I got the green power light to indicate a successful pair but nothing's happened. It won't switch on. The only difference is that I have only just started to charge mine - maybe the battery is quite flat and won't work until charged for a while.

The replacement is just being mailed back so i'm still waiting hopefully tomorrow or monday i guess. Really hope that it was the headset and not a PS3 problem.

The replacement headset arrived today and i tried once again to get it working.

Same problem, same symptoms.. Controller disconnecting etc... Going to give sony a call as it's got to be a bluetooth problem with my PS3.

Aye, looks like it is a Bluetooth fault then. How annoying. You might get a new Slim though as a replacement. :D

Yeah i wish, i was told i'll be getting a refurbished one of same model/age delivered tomorrow. After getting through the scripted commands on the phone with the guy (doing everything i already done several times) It went pretty quickly and easily.

Is there any way of rescuing my save games before i hand them my console?

Most saved games can be saved to a usb, there is a few that are protected, just remember to update your trophys as well ( just click on it so it sync with the server)

**Finally solved

The replacement PS3 arrived today and the headset connected immeadiately.

Now just to re-download everything.
