Does anyone play their PS3 using a 22" 1680x1050 monitor and if so how does it look? I really like my monitor so I can't justify buying a new one and I couldn't afford a hd tv. Thanks for your input.

Be careful as your monitor needs to support HDCP-compliance. My Dell 2407WPS doesn't, and it won't display 1680x1050 for the PS3 - just standard definition. I would assume if the monitor has HDMI slots by default it'll support it, but DVI-HDMI convertors won't work. Just a quick heads up as you do your research :)

I played on a 20" monitor with the same res. A large part of it depends on whether your monitor supports 1:1 pixel mapping or 16:9 resolutions. A PS3 displays at 16:9 so if your monitor doesn't support it the image will be stretched vertically by 1/9th.

With that said, my monitor didn't support either of those so the image was stretched and it still looked pretty damn good imo. Played Drakes Fortune, DMC4 and Super Stardust HD for a huge amount of hours before i eventually got enough money together for a HDTV.

A HDTV is better, but a monitor is still a more than viable solution, make sure it supports HDCP though or else the PS3 won't display a HD picture.

[EDIT] Just to add to Knives' post, HDCP is possible via a DVI->HDMI adapter as long as your monitor supports it so if your monitor only has DVI all is not lost if the monitor supports HDCP.

Thanks. I have read up a bit about it. Mine is a Dell 2209wa. It is HDCP compliant but has no HDMI input so I would need to get an adapter. From what I have read it will work but whether or not it looks cack is another thing :p

If your monitor is either 1280x720 or 1920x1080 it'll look great :) I believe 1366×768 is viable as well, as that's what most HDTVs are anyway. The smaller the deviation from the HD resolutions mentioned before, the better it will look.

so how does my native res of 1680x1050 fit in with that?

It'll probably looked stretched and blurry, but at the same time it probably won't be 'too bad'.

You could try setting the resolution on game or your desktop to 1280x720 and it may give you a reasonable idea of how it'll look (you'd have to tick show all resolutions) - however your video driver may have it's own scaling which would try to correct the output, if that's the case you'd have to disable it and choose let my monitor do the scaling.

Got a Samsung 225BW here. 22" 1680x1050 and it supports HDCP over DVI. Using a DVI to HDMI adapter and using 1080p from the PS3, the monitor complains that it is not running the optimum resolution but a quick press of the menu button clears that warning. Looks just as good as it did on my old 224BW and Dell S2409W (HDMI port and native 1920x1080 resolution).

Interesting to hear Senture. I would like to get one but will have to use it mainly on my existing monitor. I might get a hd tv in a few months time when I can afford it.
