ps3 on watchdog next week!

Interesting -

"Most of those independent engineers will charge almost as much as Sony for repairs and the Sony repair comes with a short (but nevertheless useful) warranty period."

Sony will in fact extend this warranty if you shout loud enough, due to my circumstances with my replacements they did for me, and it light of continuous play being disbanded for new customers at this time, Sony recognised this and thankfully they offered me a much longer warranty period on my refurb.

I think the Sony customer service supervisor blurb of "our refurbs are built to exceptional standards, and i'd be surprised if your replacement died within 12 months" did it for me, load of rubbish was in the back of my mind. To which I replied, well have faith in your refub product and give me a 12 month warranty then.. to which he did...!! result.

I still stand by my statement that neither the BBC or Sony have correctly addressed the issue, I feel the issue will become bigger over the coming months as more and more suffer, the PS3 has now entered a period were older models could fail, and we're starting to see this...

My complaint mainly has always been about the £128 charge and very short warranty to a refurb to replace what is essentially still a rather expensive bit of kit, as proved to me, a refurb can die within three months... Its not as if you have a lot of choice. Either buy a new one, a refurb one, or sell your PS3 games and get a Xbox360, all of which can leave a sour taste in your mouth, none of which are all that appealing..

Excellent letter though.

Why might the fix fail after such a short time? Surely if the solder connections have all been reflowed, it's good as new?

BGA reflow is not a simple case of re-applying heat, if the actual balls have become damaged for example popcorning a simple reflow will not fix the repair correctly. A reflow may help but in the many times ive reflowed BGAs its at most a short term fix, normally the BGAs will either have to be re-balled (painful lol) or replaced. With some BGAs they will need to have the board cleaned re-pasted and either refitted using an ir reflow station or going back through a properly profiled reflow oven.

I saw Watchdog on the iplayer and I just can't understand what they were trying to achieve. I think they should have been trying to get Sony to reduce the price of repairs or extend the warranty on repaired consoles. But they didn't try to engage Sony themselves at all it seems.

Either earlier this year or last year, Watchdog did have the Xbox 360 on it but it wasn't to do with the RROD. The problem they were "investigating" was the DVD drives badly scratching DVDs. Again they had the so called experts and stupid tests. But at least they did take consumer concerns to Microsoft and got responses from them on the programme.

I must be the only one with 2 original 40Gb phats that are still going strong after 2 years!
Not a single problem!

Now if only women were the same :(

Can any1 post what was said on watchdog? Did not see the program and want to know what was the problem.

I did a quick "PS3 edit" of Watchdog for somebody else I know who missed it.
If you want to see it, you can download it here, compressed to XviD (so you can watch it on your PS3) ;)

I was personally glad to see the YLOD issue brought up on Watchdog, after mine failed, and I paid for a refurb.... however, it could most certainly have been handled a lot better. I don't really like this new look Watchdog, the older one felt more professional somehow, whereas this new show seems to be mostly about Anne and her "team" trying to get smart ass comments out.

Vin.

Even if it is 0.5% of UK models that fail, I'm sure that figure is massaged in some way..

the figure looks better if you say you have an installed base of 2.5 mil and only 0.5 have failed..

if on the other hand the fault has been pretty much fixed on newer models and it's the early 60gb's that are prone... then the amount of those sold is far less and the % of broken PS3's is far higher.
