just bought myself a ps3 and love it, apart from this nasty crackling sound i get with an optical cable.

i have it connected to my pc thru an i/o drive with an x-fi xtreme music, then back out thru the headphone port. maybe i have a dodgy optical cable? which would suprise me as its a monster one

I don't want to blow this problem out of proportion for you... however. My creative x-fi xtreme music has started doing this too and it's actually a problem with the sound card for me. I've hooked the ps3 up to my parents amp with the same optical cable and the sound is crisp and clear. Also if i disable 5.1 audio on my sound card the problem goes away - but whats the point in having a 5.1 speaker set if you don't use it?

well im not using 5.1 im using headphones, which in the creative console is set to 2.0/2.1

tried all sorts of things nothings fixed it

i do have a reciever which takes optical cables but my optical cable is only 1 metre long which does reach it >:(

will have to stick to rca for now i reckon

hmmm.... trying with an amp would be best ideally, but failing that...

Sometimes crackling & dropouts are symptoms of a line input that is too loud.

See if attenuating the SPDIF input level helps reduce the crackling. You might also want to try keeping your headphone output on a mid-level volume also, to ensure there are no issues on that end either...

well i found out what it was.. It was the 5.1 output not working with my soundcard, which is set at 2.0

bit stupid really aint i. Thanks for your help fellas
