Hi guys, not sure why my thread was locked by thundercat. It had some interesting points in there so dont think it was read by him brfore it was locked.

My dad wont be using blu-ray player, but i suppose it is a bonus.

Is xbox live £30 a year or £40 a year? (and no monthly fee)
How does it connect? If wireless then thats good. My parents only have a pretty slow orange internet connection
Do the wireless PS3 controllers not need batteries? Only recharge in dock or something?

Controller wise, im not sure what he will like. I have used both and use a 360 pad on my pc. Both feel great to me

I just want to know info on the 2 consoles, im not trying to put them in a duel against each other or anything- probably should have put a different title before

I'm in the same dilemma.

The PS3 has built in wifi and I'm sure the new xbox 360 slims are the same.

The PS3 controllers have built in batteries which charge from a USB connection. You can also get rechargeable batteries for the xbox 360 controllers, although they do come with duracell batteries so you would need to purchase the rechargeable batteries separately.

The PS3 online subscription is free, where as the xbox 360 is something like £30 for gold subscription for the year.

Thanks. I read in another thread that the 'community' is larger with xbox partly due to the included mic, and that the 360 is easier to use

Maybe i should bear this in mind if he gets into online gaming after playing cod ect.

Im sure he wont mind £30 a year. Thats peanuts

Flip a coin really. I have both systems. Overall I prefer the PS3 just because I've always been playstation since a kid so im used to the pad and prefer the pad. Also exclusive titles on PS3 such as heavy rain, uncharted, gt5 etc which are all kind of games I like. But then 360 will have certain titles to.

As for online, I find the ps3 fine online not issues at all? but I know you pay for the 360 online but IIRC it has a better interface in terms of chat etc online? not 100% sure.

In all fairness I play online on PS3 most nights with mates and using mic etc and have little issue and im not that technically minded. I haven't had one issue online in terms of playing with people, joining games or text/mic chat on ps3. It's come a long way.

Does he have any friends that have one of those consoles already? If so then get the same one so he can play online with them.

Does he have a half decent gaming PC? A large proportion of 360 'exclusives' also come out on the PC, so its generally accepted that a PS3 will open up a wider range of titles that aren't available on the PC.

I think cross game chat is where it makes it feel that it has a larger community. I was inclined to think it did, but in reality both consoles have a strong user base. All my friends and family have PS3's yet I am selling mine now just to try an xbox out. Mainly for Forza 4 as, GT5 didn't have what I wanted.

PS3 does have some amazing titles though. The online experience on the PS3 for me as a user seemed to lack that 'social experience.' I think cross game chat is a big seller for the xbox, a feature which the ps3 does not have. However, the PS3 is an amazing console, and neither are better then each other, they're excellent in their own ways. I will have to see what the xbox 360 is like though, so take my opinion from what I've heard from others and read on the internet on it.

What are the different models of the 360 - is it called slimline?

e.g. I can get this for £150, but dont know if its the new one -- xbox 360 elite 120 GB hard drive with 2 controllers and 8 games

ps3s are around £165 for this sort of thing - ps3 slim. BOXED. with 2 controllers + black op

The new 360s comes in 2 flavours. 4GB and 250GB. The Elite 120GB is the old revision.

I'd really recommend a new one. If your dad is going to be ultra casual and only play the odd game like COD and Fifa just get a 4GB and use an USB card for extra storage.

There are various models of the 360. The new ones are matte black and in shape of an X...well sort of. They are 4GB and 250GB like the above poster stated.

The PS3's are 160GB and I think 320GB not sure if they still do the 320GB though.

I have both and much prefer my Xbox.
The blu-ray and free online is nice with the PS3 but i just much prefer the controller/os/look of the Xbox.

xbox is better for chatting to people getting games going etc, and the dashboard to me looks and feels a lot better.

The PS3 is good but the UI needs a update drastically now

I have both and prefer PS3, as it is more of a media hub than my Xbox setup (iplayer, lovefilm, itv, 4od), plays all my dvd rips fine, connect it up to my server fine. I'm pretty sure the Xbox can do all this, but mines an old one without wireless so it's off the network.

Also from memory the Xbox has far more advertising on it than the PS3.

PS3. Comes with a built in blu-ray player and free online play.

You could also get an Xbox pad for the PC. The games are a lot cheaper that way and the experience is mostly the same (except online but that's why you have the PS3 with free online play).

I confused cant you do a search and look at the myriad of threads? What you are asking for isnt that unique and the answers already given have been given countless of times before...

You get out the wrong side of the bed or something?

A lot of threads on OcUK can be answered by looking at google / the web. I wanted peoples recent opinions

If your dad has a 3D TV, the PS3 supposedly supports 3D movies and games now too. I can't comment how good this is as I don't have any active 3D glasses.

Nope not really - ever thought your previous thread was closed on the belief that recent opinions on several year old tech could be better served by google or existing threads? Are the same questions really worthy of a new discussion?

Do any of these actually need a recent opinion or were you just too lazy to bother to search/google? Im quite happy to help, but when its obvious its a thread out of poor lethargy, why really should I bother if the OP cant?
