Hello,

I have been hovering over this forum for a while now... and I have a question to ask about a dilemma I have.

Basically, I have a laptop (Sony VAIO NS20E) and a desktop. The desktop is nearly three years old and only cost about 350 to begin with, the laptop I bought recently. My primary use for the laptop was schoolwork and home use. The desktop my Dad uses for his work.

I need something to play Video Games on, the likes of CoD4: MW2 and Crysis.. etc. The Desktop can handle crysis at all low, with lowest resolution but I havent purchased MW2 yet. My laptop I dont wan't to install games on becuase it will use too much space and won't run them any better than the desktop.

So I need a budget rig that has upgrade potential and can handle cod mw2. even if its all at lowest settings it doesnt matter, just aslong as it can run it at a solid framerate. I can always upgrade later.

Or I can buy A ps3 but thats not really an option becuase I havent a spare TV to play it on.

I have a budget of around 300 (maybe lower) and was wondering if anyone had any ideas on how I should get around this and what should I buy.

Thankyou in advance.
Skurlo.

Uhh, well as I said, its really my dads cause he uses it the most, im never using it becuase my laptop has better specs and my dad doesnt want me upgrading it.

but anyways...

Uhh it has a 2.13ghz dual core.
ATI Radeon X1650se
2gig ddr2 ram
250gb 7200rpm HDD
And i can't remember anything else :L.

If you have a spare pc monitor lying around and a spare keyboard and mouse, I would go for the bugdet build, since you said you haven't got a spare TV to play the PS3 on.

My experience is as follows
Been a console gamer for years, never played on the pc due to how much a pc costs, a year ago i moved from consoles to a gaming pc and things was looking sweet.
Sadly with a pc you allways need to upgrade which allways costs money, the ps3 will never need upgrading and it will play games as smooth now as it will in 2 years time aswell as the gfx in games being better on ps3.
I wish i had a xbox again due to this, allso console games mostly come out weeks, months before pc titles.
Hope this helps.
You would'nt get much for £300 in pc gaming, you'd probly have to turn settings down unless your playing at a low res.
Did i say that in 2 years time ps3 will be running just as smooth as it is today but a pc will be running like crap ;)

If you're upgrading a PC (IE no need for new case, monitor, power supply etc) you can get a pretty good PC indeed for £300. I did that not long ago, and can run stuff maxed out in 1920*1200.

Skurlo - you could definitely upgrade that to something fast for that kind of budget.

Well, I think I might be able to persuade my dad to get a new desktop for himself and pinch the current one off him. So any suggestions for gpu's and mybe a new processor. also, how easy is it to add things to a pre-built desktop?

Thanks again.

ouch butmuncher are you trying to open up a can of worms. it will be hard to get a gaming pc for £300 but everything else you say is a bit dodgy!!!

kpeh, he's not upgrading he's buying all new

most my pc gaming consists of RTS games that are just to hard to play with a controller
example of command and conquer building a unit can take anything upto 10 seconds finding the menu selcting it building it. on a pc a simple macro or button assignment and it's a one click process. Altho different story if it's more driving games or 3rd person games then it has to be a ps3.
it's really personal choice and dependant on what type of games you really enjoy the most

Hi again,
Well fps are def better on the consoles if you like controllers as they usually have some type of auto-aim where its usually not a feature of pc games.
My mrs is getting me a 360 for xmas so ill be back to console gaming and to tell the truth i'm looking forward to it again, lol all games supported by a controller is good stuff, mw2 has no controller support, had to use xpadder for that ;).
If your dad has a pc and your happy using that then a ps3 is a good option.
Dno if i explained it earlier right so ill try again.
Pc games will get better in gfx and then your system needs upgrading to play the games smoothly.

Ps3/xbox gfx will get better and they'll run as smooth as they did today :).

i'm not a fanboy of anything. I love my pc for gaming, theres so many more options, best for me is vsync, an option some console games dont employ which leads to screen tearing.

Both have there ups and downs but if you'd like to play pc games at same spec fps as consoles you'll need alittle more than £300 unless you go second hand ;)

Dont want to incite!! but fps's are much better on the pc due to mouse controls. That is unless your not so good with a mouse. Admitedly Halo is probably more enjoyable on console but otherwise pc's for fps and rts game consoles for the rest.

What he said really. PC controls really excel in those game types, the only reason FPS games on consoles have auto aim is because it's so much more difficult to aim well with sticks on a controller. Consoles are good for sports games, racing games, platformers etc but FPS is definitely not one of the things they do better.
