PS3 or Stand alone Blueray player?

Also no one has pointed out the ps3 has superior loading times compared to other blu ray players, which can take a ridiculous amount of time to load a film;).

ps3 is good but stand alone players are better now sony and panasonic models but like others have said ps3 does play games aswell

better to whom....a spectrum analyser no doubt. The human eye is unlikely to tell the difference. Don't get me wrong my BD55 is stunning, but the PS3 is, well stunning too. Don't confuse the quality due to the fact that it is a games machine.

Based on the tiny increment performances, if you don't wan HD audio, then the PS3 provides a better overall package and only sacrifices about 2% picture quality compared to stand alone (so 'they' say), which the naked eye more likely than not cannot see under normal conditions

cant comment on bd 35 as never used one yes loading times are quicker on ps3 but once you go past the buget players you will see an improvement in picture and hear a difference in sound quality but youre also paying more money than a ps3 i used to use the ps3 myself but now use sony s5000es and a decent hdmi cable but this player is about 3 times the price of a ps3

exactly, having the best at all costs is not for everyone, what is is £1000 for the Sony ES, a great machine no doubt.

As for the whole cabling thing, can of worms, but a £5 HDMI cable over a relatively short distance will give the same results as a £100 cable

Not that great, I had a Sony s5000es for about a week and got a full refund due to not seeing any differences over a ps3! so in effect I paid almost a grand for slower loading times.

OPPO BDP-83 or JVC XV-BP1 for fast loading times on par or quicker than a ps3, and from what I have read noticeable gains over PQ.

So far, in summary, this thread has proved that people who have standalones and a PS3 togther have not noticed any difference in quality!

So why are there still people saying that standalones are better than the PS3?

I think some people think that having a standalone must be better than an all-in-one system.......

I guessing that to really notice the difference in quality, you would need a professional studio setup - not a residential one!

Even then i bet it will only be a few % which would beg the question: is it worth spending all that much money for such a little little benefit...?

Its kind of like having speakers which can produce frequencies that the human ear cant pick up. Whats the point?

i have a stand alone share bdp-20. It came free with my sharp 46 lcd.

Not sure what newer machines are like (i've left the industry now) but mine is terrible compared to using a friends ps3. Some films just stop at set points, it hates anything but the cleanest disc and loading times are a farce. I've still got friends in the trade so get the firmware upgrades from time to time but it's all hassle.

What have you read? Just out of interest. Any links for reviews and stuff?

I would get an Oppo but don't have the funds yet :)
