The console is packaged with a usb charger cable isn't it? Is the PS3 pad compatible with pc gaming when connected via usb?

The USB charger is for power only. The connection is made via bluetooth, so I suppose if someone comes up with some drivers, then YES it will be compatible.

/edit - after a quick google, it would seem that there are several sets of drivers already available :)

You would, as a logical next step, expect Sony to release PC drivers..

It was nice when MS supported the wired controllers in windows, and now they have the wireless receiver for the wireless stuff, PC gaming just got some quality controls..

I personally hate the Sony controller, but that's just down to me and the ergo's.. I've always hated the PS1/2 pads as well, I had to go and get 2rd party designs to stop my thumbs falling off!! so I would never want to use it on a PC, but I understand plenty will do!..

You think some third party would come out with a controller with the layout a little more like the 360's for the PS3 and vice versa, but still keep them different enough to avoid legal action.

I would play my 360 more if I could use a PS style controller and by the sounds of it the 360's is your controller of choice!
