Been quite a few rumors around about the new 80Gb PS3's using 65Nm CPU/GPU, im pretty Sure that it is. To clarify this i found this test done by someone using a power consumption plug ( ive have one of these) So i will compare it with my 60Gb Ps3.

User Generated Power Consumption Tests

80GB PS3 Core -

* XMB idle - 111.9 watts
* DVD playback - 126.0 watts
* Game (MGS4) - 130.0 watts

40GB PS3 Core -

* XMB idle - 125.8 watts
* DVD playback - 141.2 watts
* Game (MGS4) - 155.2 watts

80GB PS3 MGS4 Bundle -

* XMB idle - 180 watts
* Bluray Playback - 182 watts
* DVD playback - 197 watts
* Game (MGS4) - 200 watts

Stats

80GB Core vs. 40GB Core

* XMB idle - 11% Lower
* DVD playback - 10.8% Lower
* Game (MGS4) - 16.2% Lower

80GB Core vs. 80GB MGS4 Bundle

* XMB idle - 37.8% Lower
* DVD playback - 36% Lower
* Game (MGS4) - 35% Lower

What this means...
If you are a current 40GB Core owner and upgrade to an 80GB Core you will see a rough average of 12.7% less energy being used.
If you are a current 80GB MGS4 owner and upgrade to an 80GB Core you will see a rough average of 36.3% less energy being used.

Interesting things to note. The power jump between the 40GB Core and the 80GB Core is larger when playing games. This is likely an indication that it does include the new smaller die for the graphics chip, which would be most heavily stressed during game playing.

The 80GB metal gear PS3 is the same as our 60Gbs apart from a larger HDD, but its the same mother board. There is a big difference between this and the new 80Gb, does anyone with a 40Gb or a new 80Gb system with one of the power consumption plugs want to do the same test as above and ill do my 60Gb PS3. Have not heard of anyone taking an 80Gb apart and checking so this may be the only way to find out, also there should be a weight difference as the 80Gbs no longer need to use the one big fan with the 5 heat pipes instead it uses 2 heat sinks for the Cell and the RSX. Incidently the 40Gbs using a smaller single fan but uses only 2 heatpipes, possibly why they seem even quieter than the original 60Gbs.

That's pretty interesting - one of the reasons I'll eventually be buying / changing to a newer ps3 - lower power consumption, and hopefully even quieter than it currently is on my 60gb model :)

Honestly why would you care how much electricity you use playing a game? With the 360 not only are you getting a game but it also helps heating the room.

Its pennies over a month :)

I have trial of the UK PS3 80gb from a shop where you can return items before 30days :D

I'm using the eco-eye plug-in real time monitor.

The reading constantly fluctuates, so there is the minimum and maximum recording it fluctuates between for each test. The sound output for all tests is using the default Linear PCM 2CH 44.1kz + 48khz.

XMB idle @ 1080p = 107w - 107.8w

XMB idle @ 720p = 106.7w - 107.7w

XMB idle @ 720p whilst charging the ds3 controller = 113.6w - 1114.4w

Apocalypto dvd.

Upscaled @ 1080p = 112.1w - 118.7w

Upscaled @ 720p = 113.8w - 117.2w

Black Hawk Down.

Upscaled @ 1080p = 114.2w - 120.8w

Upscaled @ 720p = 114.7w - 118.5w

AVC Casino Royale 1080p clip from the psn.

106.5 - 108.6

FIFA '09 Demo. (Gameplay only)

@ 1080p = 122.7w - 129.9w

@ 720p = 121.4 w - 129.5w

Life with Playstation. (Zooming in and out of Amercia)

@ 1080p = 113.1w - 132.7w

@ 720p = 114.7w - 118.6w

I don't have a blu-ray to try at the moment.

But I had a blu-ray last week and i'm sure the reading at the start of the film was 103w @1080 ... although I have a poor memory.

Please note :

These tests were not carried out in a strict laboratory environment, so are not 100% accurate. Although the accuracy estimation is 99.9%, which isn't to bad.

well I have a 27inch HD TV and no surrond sound so a rough guess

Well me new TV i got today (as my old one died), uses 137W when in use and 0.9W standby this is for a 32" a 37" one uses 169W and a 42 uses 217W. So maybe yours would be about 114-120W, look in the manual should give you a estimate.

Just done a quick check with by power meter and read about 120w during DVD playback (upscaled) on a new 80GB PS3. I've noticed that my PS3 is silent, not had any experience with older models to compare but it is barley auidble from about 2 meters away.
