Want to get a PS3 but which version? There is the 160GB or should I get the 80GB? If you are playing the games off DVD's, what is the point in the hard drive anyway? What benefit for the extra disk space?

Should I get one with Linux pre-installed or is it easy to install myself?

Not sure if I can ask this on this forum so ignore if its not allowed: Where is the cheapest place for me to buy it?

Thanks,

Jon

General suggestion - get the best package for the money and yes you cant ask the last question Im afraid...

Most games install something, and you need patches so the HDD is needed (also you can download demos and the like from PSN). The PS3 is a very capable media players so you could use it for your videos and music too. If you were interested in PlayTV (freeview recorder) then the bigger the HDD the better (why the 160Gb was released). Remember though you can put in your own HDD easily - I put my 320Gb in for the cost of £55 and say 5mins worth of work...

Dont bother with Linux - for most part its 'useless' IIRC...

I use SKY+ for my recording so essentially, it would make sense to get an 80Gb, right? I am assuming patches and updates are rather small.

Also, any good games where I can blast the hell out of Afghanistan and Iran/Iraq? What about ones where I can use a WW2 plane and bomb Germany or warships? You can tell I'm feeling evil!

80Gb will be fine - its only media and demos that eat it up. Some things do allocate some space (Home keeps 4Gb; GT5P uses a couple of Gbs too) but its nothing major...

I think you need LPB ;)

You can easily upgrade the HDD at a later date anyway, it just takes a standard 2.5" SATA notebook hard-drive, so the 80GB would easily suffice. Most games have an install size of around 3-4GB so you'll have plenty of space available.

Little Big Planet = LBP so I guess Little Planet Big ;). He was just joking because that game is about as far removed from violence as you can get, really good fun though.

If you are feeling really brave, go fight on the frontline :)

Updates don't take up much space iirc, as each overwrites *** older one so 250MB max for system updates (I think the newest one was around that size and that supercedes all older updates). Game updates tend to be sub 100mb as well. (Assume 1 per game as an unlikely worst case scenario). Games are upto 4gb, normally 1-4GB, varies by game I would say maybe 50% of new ganmes have a mandatory HDD install?

80Gb is much more than enough to be honest. I have 13 games (some with installs) various updates about 7Gb of PSN games downloaded and about the same in demos and I still am not using 60GB (I upgraded to a 320GB drive).

PlayTv and storing video files and music locally on the PS3 would take up a lot more space, depending on the size of your collection. I store music locally and stream videos, although I could fit both with ease, If I chose to.

They added a paintgun in the MGS pack. Let the violence commence :)

Can I put a swf file on the PS3 and play it direct from there, rather than streaming from a website?

Do you always have to put in the games CD when you want to play it?

What is LPB?

Its like LBP (LittleBigPlanet) but done wrong lol.
Anyway 40Gb PS3 can be had brand new for £230 (or 225 cant remember which lol) Doesnt include games but you can get what you want then. If you're not to worried about paying a bit more the 160GB is far better value for money, you get GT5 Prologue, Ratchet & Clank Future: Quest for Booty, The Last Guy and Super Stardust HD for free. The 160gb was available for £340 ish with 3 games including LBP around Xmas time, when you consider the price of a 160GB sata 2 laptop drive is about £36 its a good value as the PSN games are worth about £40-50 alone.

ROFL oops - typo :p

I think the OP needs that game to chill - was kinda scared by his wanton lust for (very region specific) killing...

EDIT: Wasnt aware of the additional content for the 160Gb PS3 - thats definitely £35 right there...

I note that my local [competitor] store has a £299.99 deal for a PS3 80GB with Resistance 2 and Fifa 09 thrown in. Does that sound like a good deal? If i bought that, would I also need any extra cables? I have a Pioneer plasma, about 3 years old.

No competitors please

Jon you should probably star out that competitor.

I got one on Saturday with LBP, Resistance 2 and Any Game for £309 which I thought was one of the best going, especially because I wanted LBP and Resistance anyway; that deals also from a highstreet store. Also bought Uncharted and Metal Gear Solid 4 "pre-owned".

Also remember if you do buy a package to get a good deal, but think you can sell the games on you dont want you wont get great value back as the bottoms fallen out of the '2nd hand' market since its become so cheap to get console games online...

Lucky to get £20 for a console games '2nd hand' as a generalisation...

Shouldnt make a massive difference, but just wanted to make that point...

You really need to stop referring to the shops - just gonna get suspended (especially since youve been here like forever) - all in the FAQ

Star it out ;)

Yes you can get an HDMI cable from those places - but I would recommend ukhdmi.com or pop into a supermarket - dont spend more than £10!!!

Cool. I was going to try and see if a store which is closing down had them on sale but I think they get sent back to the suppliers. Another store will be closing down though so maybe they might have them.

I'm a massive 360 fanboy as many know, played on my cousins PS3 over the holidays and really liked Wipeout HD. Didn't think much of Resistance and LBP bored me. The controllers were a little too light for me but the DS3 controllers must have more weight so that wouldn't be a issue. Loading times were a little bit too long though.

But yeah should I come across one for cheap then I will probably pick one up.
