PS3 Problem

Are disc reading problems common?

My PS3 has suddenly stopped loading disc's. I put the game in, it shows its loaded under games, I click it, it goes to and freezes on the Playstation 3 sign.

Also, I'm getting one artifact, always in the same place, its massive! Its an original 60gig, worked fine for a long while.

Apart from hitting it, anything I can do to maybe repair it?

EDIT - also, its out of warranty, will I have much luck getting it replaced if I need too?

Not common, but not rare.

Out of warranty, may be hard but some people have had their console replaced anyway.

Ok, I formatted completely, seems to work now! Strange.
