My 60gb ps3 has a few issues that I assume are software related but thought Id check.

1. Sometimes I have to reset all settings back to default for it to play dvd or bluray - when I play them the screen will just go black with no response from the console (like the reset button wouldnt work), and i would have to reset all settings to solve this. This sometimes can happen with ps2 games too.

2. Sometimes the screen flickers white for a fraction of a second, every few seconds. Almost like something nearby is interfering, but there are no wireless devices and my mobile isnt the culprit. I assume this is due to my hmdi and cheap ebay hdmi to dvi adapter for use on my samsung 24inch.

I am hoping this is a software issue, as my ps3 is over a year old now:(

TIA

Sounds like some kind of HDMI handshaking problem, and the DVD problem can also be related to the PS3/TV.

How do you mean a handshaking problem?
When default settins have been set the films work fine for a few months until it screws again - no idea why console wont respond to anything but a turn off and on at the back though when this happens.

The flickering white on the screen is an intermitent fault, which is why I think it had something to do with the cabling.

Another guy had similar problems, he said he did a full format and system restore on his PS3. It's a software issue.

You can do a system back up to an external USB hard drive/memory stick if you have one available. The PSN games can be re-downloaded for free.

The format has fixed the ps2 game and dvd/bluray issue for now, whether it comes back time will tell.

The flickering is intermittent and really annoying. The picture is fine, then it is almost like one frame every 3/4 seconds is white/grey.

Have tried a friends hdmi, and no difference. The problem only seems to be there when in 1080p, but this could just be chance.
Could it be the dvi to hmdi adapter I am using??
I am now thinking there is something wrong with the ps3, yet it is over a year old:(

Kind of like this, but it does it on the startup dash as well as some games, inc ps2/bluray/dvds

Could be the adapter. HDMI connections have to do a digital handshake - the HDCP (copy protection). If it's not working properly, it could be responsible for these flashes.

Sounds like the flashing might be the adapter to me, also. But as said regarding handshaking, HDMI does seem to be finicky. With my system I have to allow each device (TV, AV Receiver, PS3 or DVD player) completely boot before powering the next device on, else I have a similar problem with not getting a proper display. I wait 15 seconds between powering on each device.
