I have 2 PS3's, An old 60gb phat and a 120gb slim.

The slim just freezes on checking file system screen. Google suggests the hard drive has died.

The phat just beeps and switches off.

Are any of them repairable? I've stripped the phat once before to repaste and clean already.

Does the 60gb blink with a yellow light?
You could search the internet for solutions on the 'yellow light of death'. Cos thta's what's probably going on with that.

The slim, you could buy a new HDD for it. fairly cheap. Just make sure it's the right size, 2.5" I think.

Somewhere on the slim should be a small cover to slip out the HDD. Think it was under the power button for the slim. It's very easy to do.

When replaced, switch it on and restore the system. If you get stuck, a top results youtube video would give you a step by step I'd imagine.

Don't you have to format the new HDD to FAT32 with a PC before it can be used in a PS3 or is that just for external HDDs? I upgraded my internal PS3 HDD years ago but can't remember if I had to format it first or the PS3 did it instead.

The PS3 sorts it.
I did it before, and remember putting it straight into the PS3 without doing anything.

Still works 7 years later.

If you cant get the current drive to boot in the ps3, you could try the restore ps3 system option from the PS3 safe mode menu.

That will format the drive.

I once had a prob with my ps3s drive, it kept looping or getting stuck at a certain part of the restoring file system etc.

I took the drive out the pc, put it in the laptop and ran checks on it via a boot cd and it showed up ok,

Put it back in the PS3 and done the option to restore the system and its been fine since.

Its worth a try.
