PS3 - PS2 PSOne Backwards Compatibility Database

I never played a PS1 game on my PS2 and I have yet to play a Xbox game on my 360.

Not saying people don't. I've just never seen the point.

The point is probably that you should be able to get rid of that previous-generation hardware. Why have two machines when (hopefully) one can do the job.

I was playing Grand Theft Auto Vice City on my Xbox 360 at the weekend which upscales the resolution to 1920x1080 over VGA. It looks sweet! Almost like the PC version.

I was watching click on BBC news 24 last night about the PS3, it looks great, you can see it online at the BBC website as well, they were on about it being able to play PS1/PS2 games, they said theres a load of very old ones which refuse to work, but they are working on that at the mo and an update to fix it will be released soon so they will all work. :)

hmm u may want to play GT4, or FFXII, or similar on PS3 until the PS3 versions come out...
Which in the case of FFXII will never happen.

I use my PS2 for PS1 games quite often. I play all the old FFs on it.

That database only has the US versions. For one thing I know that the american FFV had problems on the PS2 but the EU one is fine. Not to mention the FF anthology package has different games in the EU version.

any reasons why FFXII wont be PS3?

Well thats disappointing, as the PS2 could improve PS1 gfx.

It might happen in a couple of years when they change from hardware emulation to software emulation. Maybe upscale to 1080p like the 360 does.

Because it's a PS2 game that's already been out in Japan since march. No need to make a PS3 version since it seems it works fine on the PS3 anyway.

sorry, i meant PS3 plays the PS2 version of FFXII, and thats why backward compatability is a good thing?
Yeah I was just pointing out that there won't be a PS3 version of FFXII. Sorry I think my post was slightly ambiguous.

That's pretty shoddy stuff.

if you have a ps2 you might as well keep it.
the annoying thing is it was one of sonys big selling points.
we will have full compatability unlike the xbox 360 where they have had to it via software.

It was (and still is) Sony's plan to do the PS2 and PS1 backwards compatiblity via a software emulator, but in order to get backwards compatibility in the launch consoles they put the single-chip combined Emotion Engine and Graphics Synthesisor from the PS2 into the PS3 hardware. (They haven't said the reasons why they failed to get software emulation going yet...!)

But Sony have reitterated since the launch that they still plan to do the backwards compatibility via emulation software and remove the legacy PS2 parts in a future hardware revision.

well i hope they do a better job next time.
if its done by software like the 360 will you have patches for every game.
to me that would be a backward step for sony.
