Here is the deal.

If I turn on my PS3 it shuts off after half a second, no light comes on, not even a red light.
I have to leave it and keep trying the switch at the back to get the red light back but it will not power on.

Can I assume the PSU is dead and order a replacement for 30 euro and replace the PSU?

Is it easy to replace?

Bought a replacement PSU, switched the PSU and tried it again ....... but still nothing, dammit

I guess I will bite the bullet and get a slim :(

Wait till September if you can, 320GB Slim (revised board with 40nM GPU) with PS3 eye, Move controller, DS3, Sports Champion, Move demo disk all for £285 RRP.

Yeah, just seen that, it is tempting as my son/GF like the Wii but the release date is the 15th of september, that is a whole month without a PS3

my ps3 (40gb) has died too - looking to heatgun it this weekend to retrieve my stuff then sell. can i ask where you guys saw the above deal (within the rules off course!)

edit: just seen the press release :)

My brothers did this a few weeks again, I googled around a bit and read that if you take the hard drive out and clean out all the dust from its bay, and from all the vents then try again. Basically give it a good clean.

I did it carefully with a hoover, plugged it back in and worked right away. It might be worth a try.

I will eat my hat if that is the problem but I will try it tonight.

Tried removing the HDD, vacuuming the holes but it helped nothing, also the original 60GB HDD didn't help so I have given up for now and bought a CECH-2104a slim with 40nm RSX and I must say it's much quieter than the launch 60GB Fat.

I am just again peed off about the savegames that can't be backed up, so now I miss my progress on Killzone 2 and Skate 2
Skate 2 is particulary annoying as my son likes to play that a lot, is there any way to get 100% completion with a savegame or cheating?
Or should I forget that and spend 4 euro to get the unlock from PSN?

[edit] I just realized there is a disc in the drive, is there a way to get it out without power? [/edit]

Opened up the PS3 again, dismantled the BR drive to get a game out, completely stripped it down to the mobo as well to reflow, put it back together and ...... still nothing :(

I did notice that the mobo was very shoddy, thermal paste dripped on other parts of the mobo, paste went through the mobo to the other side as way too much was applied, maybe because this is a refurb model that was done manually?

So far I have tried cleaning, new PSU, reflow, new HDD and I am running out of ideas.
