Just ordered one from japan and i intend (for the time being) to run it through my monitor, i was considering a hdmi to dvi cable, just need to know how exactly the sound output works seeing as hdmi carries audio as well. Is it as simple as plugging the component cables into the system as well and linking up the audio connectors to my pc?

There's an optical out socket which, presumably, you could use in conjunction with HDMI.

I haven't tried it as I get the sound through my LCD TV (via HDMI)

Yeah there is an optical out you can use.
But i do think you can also hook up the regular cable that comes with it along with the HDMI cable and get sound.
At least i am assuming that from lookin at the manual

This might help you

Never used optical before, is it a different kind of connection from a standard audio jack you'd plug into a pc soundcard?

Well just had a look and optical is a weird looking little conection with one on each end, is there such a thing as an optical cable with the optical on one end and the standard red and white audio connectors on the other?

No optical is a digital connection for 5.1 audio. You can't get a cable like that because light can't just be converted into electricity like that.
