It's also worth looking into AVCHD, which is of a superior picture quality to the standard DVD format but due to being encoded in h.264 you can fit an entire 720p home movie onto a single 4.7gig dvd-r. Plays perfectly in blu-ray players and on the PC, won't work on a standard dvd player though.
