I'm thinking about getting a PS3 either new or second hand but I have afew questions;

Are the 40GB and 80GB the same apart from the obvious difference if harddrive size? And is the drive just used to store downloaded games/saved games?

Is the 60GB the same as the 40/80GB apart from it can play PS2 games?

If I got one new is the 80GB the only one being sold now?

Thanks in advance.

They're nearly identical but there are two subtle differences:

1. The 80gig comes with a dualshock 3 whereas the 40gig comes with a sixaxis. Imo the dualshock is far superior mainly as it has rumble.

2. The 80gig has certain parts built at a smaller manufacturing process, basically this means it'll run slightly cooler and therefore quieter, it also consumes less electricity. I have a 40gig and it's whisper quiet though, so the noise isn't an issue really.

No, the 60gb also has 2 extra USB ports and a card reader (as in SD cards etc). It is also built on the largest manufacturing process so that it generates more heat and uses more electricity than all of the other models.

It's the only one being manufactured at present, i think there are still a few 40gigs floating around as old stock but i haven't checked in ages

The 40GB units came with a sixaxis and the 80GB a Dual shock 3 controller, the 60 GB units have 4 x USB ports instead of 2 and also have card readers and a silver trim. At the moment the 80GB is the only new model for sale, there was a limited edition 160GB which was worth the £50 as it came with over £50 of PSN games, twice the HDD space and 65Nm Cell and RSX. The newer 80Gb models also have 65Nm Cell/RSX but as the older ones dont you may get the "older" models with a 65Nm cell and 95Nm RSX.

Righteo, sounds like going for an 80GB model will be my best option then.

I would agree, but wait until after E3 (which starts on Tuesday) to see if there's any major changes announced. There's many rumours including a slimline PS3 and a price cut, both of which may affect your decision.

What's the deal with the 160gb? Mine's a 160 as I imported it but I rarely see them about in this country.

It depends, in certain regions the 160gig iirc is just a 40gig with a larger harddrive. Over here the 160gig was simply a limited edition release that was, in terms of hardware, identical to the 80gig but with a larger harddrive and came with loads of PSN games preinstalled.

Give it until after E3, if you wait this long another week wont matter, there may be a price cut announced and PS3 slim is real according to various places and 1 very reliable source (not confirmed though). The Slim will more likely be a TGS announcement though if it happens, they can use the price cut on this current PS3 model to clear stock ready for the PS3 slim.
