TBH most of those guys will be ebay resellers you see it a lot with limited release Nike shoes in the states.

I went to a launch of a new pair of air force ones whilst in the us and quite a few of the guys who I passed in the line were typing up ebay auctions while they were waiting

Is there any proof that those people are actually queueing for the PS3? That photo could have been taken any time and those people could be doing anything...

Obsessive-Compulsive Disorder but lack of PS3 consoles at launch (400k) could have contributed to this.
