Yellow Light of Death, I'm afraid. Presumably it's an old 'fat' PS3?
It can be fixed, but it's anybody's best guess as to how long it will last. Mine did the YLoD just before Xmas, took it apart and used the heatgun 'trick' on the CPU and GPU and got it working again just for long enough to get my save data off of it before it turned itself off again.
Just bear in mind that you'll lose data if you put a HDD from one console into another one. The file system is tied to the console it was originally used on.
How do they repair? I repair PCs for a living so I could give it a crack. I read earlier that the Hard drive can sometimes be to blame but i've tried a working one to no avail.
YLOD (Yellow Light of Death), I remember a friend's console getting this and he had a lot of good times with it.
Sort of sad when you've had it for years and it suddenly dies on you.
YLOD is a Motherboard and CPU fault. The CPU gets so hot overtime it is melting away from the Motherboard very slowly.
You could repair it if you know what you're doing. Look on YouTube for tutorials or even demonstrations on how to repair the PS3 Fat's YLOD issue. Even if; it will last at least a year before failing again.
To increase the duration of it lasting if you manage to repair it. Try to keep it cooled and open to air and keep it clean from dust.
Speaking about dust; this can also cause YLOD to kill your PS3.
Hope you can repair it my friend. If you can, post some pics up of it working and what you did.
Hi there. I was given a old ps3 with ylod last week which I managed to fix. Was quite simple really. Just had to strip it down to the bare motherboard, heat it all up and add flux around the CPU and GPU then heat it up again more so around the chips. Put it back together and it is still working.
