PS3 Region Free'ness

Is it a case of buy an American game ie NCAA 09 - put it in drive and viola game works?

Or do you have to patch this, mod that, install the other etc etc

All ps3 games are supposed to be region free, but any updates or downloadable content for it can be region locked.

That is rather a cool feature - I looked into it a while ago but most games have such a close release date across the globe it doesn't seem to be that useful, unless it is only released in one country.

That breaks my heart, so patches are not accesible for us Europeans then?

My Resistance 2 works swimmingly. Not had any problems at all with it in terms of patches, dlc remains to be seen but i've always got my US psn account.

No, you can import games & update them & buy downloadable content for them but I think you'll need a PSN account for that region to do it.
Can remember when COD4 got patched in USA a few weeks before us, it meant anyone with a USA copy over here could'nt play against anyone in the friends list with a pal copy till infinity ward patched the pal version.
