PS3 Resolution question

I just got a PS3 yesterday (traded in my 360 as I am not much of a games player and wanted BR and couldn't afford both)

I was wondering how you get games to play in 1080p :confused:

I have a Sony KDL-40W2000, which definately supports 1080p. It plays BR in 1080p, the PS3 menu is in 1080p, but as soon as I load COD4 it switches to 720p, even though it says on the back of the box that COD4 supports 1080p :confused:

Is there some setting I have missed? Am I being incredibly stupid?

Any help appreciated :)
 
Try deselecting 720p in the display settings -> custom. I haven't checked the res it runs on my Sammy 40", but CoD isn't true 1080p anyways, it's scaled from some bizarro res :p

edit - My Sammy does the same, I'll try forcing it once this patch has downloaded... :p

COD4 isnt even 720p iirc, its 600p (ish) and upscaled.
all games run in 720p, as at the mo most ps3 games are 360 ports anyway.

soon though, games are in 1080p, such as the new GT, wipeout etc.

So there are no PS3 games that are 1080p yet, even ones that say on the back that 1080p is supported :confused:

What about PS3 exclusives?

I also think the GT HD demo is 1080P and i know the upcoming GT5 prologue is 1080P ( partially upscaled though)
The titles mark [ps] are psn titles
 
the 1080p on the box usually just means it will run on a 1080P screen not necessarily run AT 1080p which is very misleading(most games are upscaled). The PS3 dash looks nice in 1080p tho. The GT and Ridge race demo runs at 1080p too i think.

Looking at the list, I know for a fact that the Pirates of the Carribean game doesnt run at 720p let alone 1080p

If you deselect 720p in the display settings and the game doesn't support 1080i/p, then it will run at 576p. TBH, it's not worth playing games at 1080p unless they're the basic PSN ones. Frame rate will suffer compared to playing at 720p.
 
It's a shame you can't change rez more easily on the fly. With COD4 you have to disable 720p which will then force it to upscale to 1080i - but at 1080i I find that everything in COD4 looks perfect apart from the player names above their heads is stretched horizontally. Then when I put R:FOM in, with 720p disabled it drops itself to 576 and looks pants.

I just set mine to 720p in the XMB and have done with it. Then all games seem fine. (My telly only does 1080i not p I'm afraid to say.)

Isnt this just upscaled to 1080p ? - ie still rendered internally at 720p but upscaled to 1080p by the PS3 ?.

Can you see a tangible improvement between 720p & 1080p ?
