Tonight I will be going to a PS3 retail event as my girlfriend works in a store that will sell PS3's

I am hoping we can play some games and check out the hardware up close.

Is there anything I need to ask them or look for hardware and software wise?

Try and have a bash on Motorstorm, it's really good fun, but make sure you play as a Motorbike if you want to see some awesome ragdoll physics.

I love these things, I used to get invited to loads of PC hardware ones, When I worked for the Uni. I still get the news letters through, but don't go as often, As ocUK and Google show me most of what I need to know.

I did get to see quadcore about 3 months before I saw ANYTHING on here tho. Which was pretty cool.

PS3 wise, See if you can get them to Demo something new :p They may have some demos with them

I don't know excactly what we will be allowed to do, I am hoping it is lots of opportunity to play some games and check out the hardware, I just hope it's not just talking and presentations :o

If that is the case I guess I'll sneak out to find the bar :p

OMFG, the PS3 is amazing running on a 1080 Full HD screen

- Motorstorm is ace, plays well and is so smooth, all the cars/bikes breaking up is so cool.
- NBA 2K7 is allright but not too spectacular, it looks better but movement is not that good.
- Resistance Fall of Man is underwhelming compared to Call of Duty 2 on the PC, it plays very smooth but graphics/textures are not that great.
- Dark Kingdom looks even better than Oblivion on the PC, it is truly amazing how smooth the graphics are at 1080p
- F1 is amazing, some of the ingame shots are almost as good as TV images, I think if you run a replay and don't tell anyone it is a PS3 game they think they are watching TV, also the fps are not a problem.
- World Championship Snooker is bad, but how much IQ can you get out of a snooker game :p

I did however find out you need a 1080p LCD to get any good image out of it, they had a demo running on a 1080p LCD next to a CRT and the difference was huge, the CRT had horrible aliasing which wasn't visible on the LCD

They did not give away free PS3's though but they did make an offer of a PS3, 2 games, HDMI cable, 40" 1080p LCD for Eur 2100, normal price Eur 2800 :o

Very few PS3 games actually run in 1080p at the moment though do they?

Could be, the problem was that there were hundreds of people there and only a few reps so question were a no-no :( so I could not ask them in detail about the resolutions.

Maybe a lot of games were running in 720p but the difference between that and a CRT was huge.

It is possible to run games on a CRT but they (Sony) do not advise it, especially as it has a Blu Ray player, the same a with the XBox 360

Why is it that games running on a console always run much smoother than on the PC  Is it because developers can optimize a game because they know excactly what the hardware can do?

What difference does having a BluRay player make? What sort of TV do Sony think the majority of people will be using?

Detail is often sacrificed to achieve performance on consoles.

As I said before, it will work fine on a older CRT but there is a clear difference in quality when using a HDTV, either a 720p or 1080p

Well yes :p

But to "not advise it" is a tad extreme.

Maybe "not advising" aren't the right words (forgive me please as english isn't my native language), they did not say it in those words but they did mention on several occasions that the IQ is better on a HDTV, playing games and watching a Blu Ray movie.

They had two setups running next to each other, one LCD and one CRT and I could notice quite clearly that the LCD was less aliased and much brighter/sharper.

But off course it is no problem to buy a PS3 and use it with a CRT until you get a LCD in the future.
