PS3 returned...

This is quite interesting. Mines never made any more noise than a very slight hum from the cooling after it's been on for a bit.

Went round my bro's last nite and his is sat in an AV rack with a glass door over the front.

Things was seriously warm and the fan was kicking in louder than ever!

I would suggest that it's critical to make sure the unit has plenty of "breathing space". Since he moved it out and put it on top of the unit it's been the same as mine.....
I had mine in the DVD slot of my cabinet for a while and it was boxed in on five sides. I generated loads of heat and the fan was constantly on max, which is still aboutu the same volume as my 360 on idle, so I moved it back on top of the cabinet and it stands next to my 360 again... nice and cool and quiet again now :)

I thought I was going crazy when loads of people where saying the PS3 is quite noisy - mine is just (temporarily) placed on the floor under my tv and its completely silent (the little noise that F@H produces even drowns out the noise of the fan)
