Just sat down for a quick go on Uncharted 3 and 5 minutes in I got flashing red light!!! I plan on stripping it down and doing a reflow but I don't have a heat gun - has anyone tried an oven bake instead?

Putting plastic in the oven? *facepalm*

PS3's are notorious for the solder melting on the components, My old PS3 (the fat one) had this problem, I got it fixed at then sold it to Gamestation, the fan was hella noisy, but thankfully the shop was busy, tried to sell it to HMV but they couldn't get it to work (not knowing about having to reset it after using it with standard AV cables instead of a HDMI cable)

Used the money to buy a brand new 320GB slim :)

I have fixed a GFX card from my old laptop and a 360 this way before - you strip it down to the motherboard, cover in tinfoil but leave the GPU & CPU exposed then bake at 200c for 10 minutes.

Never done it on a PS3 though so just wondered if anyone had.

Simples.

It's not THAT different to using a heat gun so I imagine it would work. Not sure if I'd want to be the one to try it though :p

Sorry for your loss.

Same thing happened to my PS3 2 days ago :(

I have had terrible luck with consoles at Christmas. My first 360 didn't work on Christmas Day and now my PS3 gets the YLOD a few days after.

I fixed my fat PS3 which had the YLOD, with a hairdryer! Sold it to CEX, it passed all their tests just fine. :)

Try fix it without removing the warranty sticker then just get it.

Borrowed my mates heat gun, striped it down, did 2 passes with the heat gun for 45 seconds on each chip to reflow and flipped over mobo and did the same on the other side... let her cool, applied some AS5 and rebuilt her...

...she lives - woooooooooooooh!!!

Thank god for that, it's not just games I would be missing but TV too as I use PlayTV and my screen doesn't have a built in tuner!
