Or at least I think so ? I have a slim here and it does seem to take longer to load games than what I remember it doing.. Not BD games either, but HD installed PSN titles.. Same deal on installing. Its seems maybe 20% slower than i feel it should be..

Any suggestions other than what I'm already thinking? That maybe the HD is playing up.. ??

Does anyone know what file system it uses? I was thinking about throwing it into a Dell laptop and running the 32bit diagnostics, which would run a surface scan on it.. Unless there's a hidden way to do that within the PS3 itself? Unlikely but worth an ask..

Thing is it all works fine... AND maybe it was like that from new.. I have an original 60gig in the other room and it just feels faster on load. Both have 5400rpm upgraded drives.

So tonight i tested for real and get to the bottom of it and yup something is wrong..

I copied over a gigabit lan a 7.8gig file onto my original launch day 60gig and it took 15min 33secs

on my slim (same network speed/connection blah blah) it was going to take over 100mins before i killed it..

Thing is there's no clicking sound or any additional HD whirling going on..

I suppose i could slap in another HD for the fun of it, make sure its not some weird I/O processing problem or something ?

What ever the case, I'm going to have to go through the painstaking process of re-downloading and re-installing everything... ugh... Can't take the chance on the backup. Don't want to be chasing my own tail because of some weird problem that 'may' replicate itself on an image restore.

Oh well, better get testing.. Warranty runs out in a couple of weeks..

Maybe related to the last update?

System Software 3.41 (Update)

For those users who are replacing the PS3 hard disk drive: we are aware of the symptoms with the system software update 3.41, released on July 27, and that it will cause the update to stop in some occasions while replacing the PlayStation 3 (PS3) Hard Disk Drive (HDD) if the PS3 system is installed with version 3.41.

To resolve these symptoms, we have released a new version of system software update 3.41 with a very minor change (the version number does not change) on August 2. If you are experiencing such symptoms when replacing the HDD of your PS3 system, we kindly ask you to use the latest data and try again. We apologise for any inconvenience this may have caused, and appreciate your understanding and continued support.

For any other questions, please contact your local customer service.

Its not your exact problem but it may be another issue caused by the old version of the update.

You could try using the 'restore file system' and 'rebuild database' tools within the recovery menu to see if that makes a difference. See here for how to access it.

Very good to know for the future. Unfortunately a little too late for me though. I used the regular format/restore from within the regular menu last night.. Only opted for the quick format because the other one estimated 14hrs to complete ??? Anyway, with everything wiped down, i tried the copy across of the large file and still same problem. It was gettnig late so i had to abandon any further testing.

Gotta go to work now, so unable to do anything else.. Will try the Restore File System from the recovery menu, and that doesn't fix, then a new HD...

Sounds weird, but I do know that if you're downloading content off the PSN, be it games or videos and the like, your installation and file transfers will be noticeably slower.

I do seem to be back in business.. I swapped out the HD and started from scratch.. Must have been a bad HD ?

What annoys me is that the thing was working fine, only slower than what I recall.. If I didn't have another PS3 to compare it against, I would have just accepted that the way it is and been none the wiser.. No error messages, no games not loading or freezing.. Just slower HD access.. about 4 times slower to be precise..

Anyway you can use the scale of a 7.8gig shouldn't take longer than 15mins to copy across on a wired gigabit lan, using PS3 Mediaserver if you think you are having a similar issue.
