Hi people i dont know what to do for the best with the display settings.

As you know the ps3 asks you in the display options what your tv can display so you pick a number of options 720p.1080i bla bla bla

but unless 1080i is selected ive heard blueray cant downscale to 720p so drops you to 480i.

but when you have 1080i selected along with 720p what happens when i play a game ? do i get 1080i or 720p(i want 720p)but ive read the ps3 thinks 1080i is a higher setting in its pecking order.

all a little confusing lol and i realy cant be asked to select 1080i only when i want to watch a film.

and NO i dont want to spend 2k on a 1080p tv sony :)

so what are you guys doing with your setups ?

my current tv is a dell 26" HD LCD from when the price dropped out of them.

I have mine set to 1080i. Everytime I launch a game it sets the res itself, i.e. Motorstorm 720p GTHD 1080i etc. I think most will use 720p though as it's obviously less strain on the GPU.

I don't we should be worrying about games straining the GPU. This isn't a PC we're dealing with here. If a game has support for 1080i/p then use it - it's there for a reason.

From what I've read on games' news sites, the resolution at which the PS3 outputs, does affect the game framerate. I can't remember the example they used but they played a game at 720p and it was mostly a solid 60fps. Then when they chose the 1080p option is lowered to a rather cranky 30fps with some stuttering now and again. I think it was NBA Homecourt.

It was Eurogamer about NBA Street Homecourt:

When running at 720p on either console, NBA Street Homecourt is a fast and slick arcade-style game, running at 60fps. A consistent framerate makes any game feel more fluid, more responsive, more lifelike. In a game like NBA Street Homecourt, where the animations are so detailed, a full framerate makes a huge amount of difference. In drawing over twice the amount of pixels in 1080p mode, the game's framerate is savagely slashed to 30fps, altering the feel, making it feel less slick, less arcade-like. The problem is seemingly a little more pronounced on the PS3, where even 30fps seems to be too much to ask for, with the action marred by random frame-outs that cause wholly unnecessary in-game stuttering. What is all the more annoying is that there's no option within the menu system to avoid this visual calamity on either version.
