PS3 - Shocking failure rate.

1% is pretty damn good, hopefully the Elites will have a lower failure rate than the current 360
I reckon they will if the new cooling thingy majig is in them, then again that will probably be in the non-1337' too.

They'll just be as ***** in reliablity as the current 360 I bet.
Hopefully not I guess they tested it atleast to see if it reduces temps?

Or something, sure they didn't add it for no reason at all.

Even so if my current 360 (Unbanned one) lasts till warranty ends I'm gonna do some little modifications to help cooling.

Then in comparison I've used my 360 for over 80 hours in 3 weeks. A 70 hour plus forza career and a 10 hour Dirt career/championship. :D
You sunk my battleship.

I've barely played my 360 since I can't afford any of the new games. :(

Yeah I watch DVD' on my 360 a lot too since it upscales over VGA, (PS3 won't over component).

Got the 360 remote too which does my TV also so prefer using that to the PS3 pad and seperate remote.

360 is nothing compared to the PS3 in terms of watching DVDs, well on a 42" plasma using HDMI anyway. Oh and the quietness. mmmm...
360 is quiet when playing DVD' though and really I doubt there is hardly any difference in quality between the two for DVD unless the PS3 upscales it higher?

Andybtsn said:
LOL,quiet? Its quieter than playing a game, yes, but its not quiet. :)

I found the quality on the PS3 better than the 360 yeah, not sure if it upscales higher tbh.
I can barely hear it even when my TV is on "low" volume so to me it is quiet, the drive makes no noise so the only sound is coming from the fans, which aren't even that loud. ;s

Hmmm, I have music playing now ans I can still hear my 360!

Don't you have a PS3 by the way?
Yeah I have a PS3, I sit literally next to my 360 and I can barely hear the thing when DVD' are playing, obviously I can hear it when games are playing though.

Bearing in mind my PC is on nearly all the time too so no noise generated by consoles can match it.

Think you need your ears testing ;)

Anyway, going to you're above comment, why not sell the PS3 and buy games for your 360?
I'm not picky with the noise of consoles in general and really I don't have any reason to complain about the 360, it's not like I play with games and films muted.

No point in selling my PS3 now Heavenly Sword is like 2 months away!

I was watching a DVD on my PS3 last night just to compare the noise difference and after about 10 mins of playback my PS3 fans were actually louder than my 360.

Isn't that a sign of a fault? Should I take it back?

Ah right well I'll try take it back to HMV later then, thank **** I have a Memory Stick to copy my saved games to, pen drive doesn't get detected!
Andybtsn said:
Definately, unless your you're talking BS to give the PS3 a bad name!
Nope. :(

It was quite a bit louder than my 360, I was shocked too. :o

You can hear the PS3 fans after a while although it's more the sound of air being pushed rather than a grating fan noise like you have on some 360 consoles. The 360 consoles vary wildly in terms of the noise they produce. My first used to sound like a model aircraft being revved where as my replacement is much quieter and doesn't whine so much. It seems like you have one of the quieter ones.
Yeah my 360 fan seems to whine a bit, still reasonably quiet.

I read about the PS3 fans that if they spin up too fast or don't spin down after exiting folding that something is wrong, oh well just happy I can keep my saved games.

Edit: Just got off the phone with HMV said I can take it to them for a straight swap. :)

My PS3 does the same thing... it's sitting in the middle of an AV Rack with other gear (open back/front, glass shelves), and after 10 mins, the fans start to get louder and louder.. not quite 360 playing a game loud of course, but loud enough to notice it isn't 'silent'..

It's not surprising, it's well documented that the PS3 kicks out a lot of heat, and if you don't have very good airflow around it, the fans will kick in to get rid of the heat build up.. I've had 3 PS3's under my TV, all behave the same, after 10 mins, the fans wind up to a noticeable level.. I think mine is a little bit louder then some, but I can't see how I could take this back and claim it's a faulyt?
My PS3 is very well ventilated, lots of space for air to get out but it just speeds up even when idle on the XMB after 10 mins or so.

rofl msmalls.

Sorry to take this slightly off topic, but if everyone knows 360s have a giant failure rate, and if everyone knows why 360s fail, and everyone knows what the problem is and roughly how to fix it, does that mean there are third party modifications out there to improve cooling that actually make the console more reliable?
The intercooler apparently isn't very good, your best bet is to mod the 360 yourself when the warranty is over, e.g. adding a third fan to the front and replacing the current fans.

Also you can stick some AS5 thermal paste on the heatsinks. :)
