PS3 Slim and USB/External Storage

I just got my Son a 12Gb PS3 Slim for Xmas and I want to add some external storage to it so he can take advantage of some of the games on PlayStation Plus.

If I add a USB pen Drive or external USB Drive to the PS3 would I be able to save the downloaded games to this ?

No, you need to install a HDD if you want more storage. External devices are for media and backups any.
