Hey guys

Got a PS3 with no hard drive, Ergo no XMB, no software, everywhere I've found online doesn't give much in the way of information on what to do.

Would installing a HDD with a PS3updat.pup re-install the main system software?

Nevermind, problem potentially sorted.

Yeah just shove the firmware update on a USB stick and it will prepare the HDD and everything else ready to go.

Ok seem to have hit another hurdle.

The HDD in question is a basic 80Gb seagate model, PS3 needs Fat32, yet everything I've tried to format it as such has failed?

Further digging has stated that Fat32 has a limit on disc size to around 32Gb, yet when I upgraded my PS3 to a 500Gb HDD it formatted as Fat32 just fine and worked fine in the PS3, has anyone got any ideas?

I tried formatting it as Fat32 via the command line, Got to 100% very slowly indeed just to say it failed :S

You don't format it with Windows. When you put the HDD in the PS3 and install the firmware from USB, it prepares everything automatically.

Oh ffs, that is what I was doing wrong...

I put the firmware on the drive, in the folders PS3, UPDATE and wondered why it wasn't spotting it...

I am an asshat! :D

You can do it either way but the ps3 will still quick format a freshly fat 32 formatted drive regardless.
