PS3 sound issue with some games

It's been bugging me for years but tonight I decided to ask here about it. On some games like Borderlands 2, Resistance 2 when you've got characters speaking to you in the game world, if I turn away from them I can no longer hear what they're saying. It's only because of the subtitles I realise they are still speaking.

So is it a setting on my PS3 that's not right or do all games do this because of 5.1 surround sound? I am only using basic HDMI to connect from PS3 to my tele.

I could swear it doesn't do it on the 360 or the PC though.

I'd check your audio settings, it sounds like your PS3 is set up for surround?

In the Audio Output Settings, I just get -

Connector Type : HDMI
Output Format : Linear PCM 2 Ch. 44.1 kHz (and 48kHz)

Have you tried with another HDMI cable? does it happen if you turn away from them both ways or just one side?

Yes and yes. I think it's just a peculiarity with certain games. The audio coding on PS3 might have weird quirks like this compared to the others.
