I've got my PS3 set up so it connects via HDMI to the TV, then for sound it is connected to my PC's sound card (connected via the AV lead via the red/white audio cables).

The PC has 5.1 speakers but the PS2 seems to downscale sound to 2ch (its says to change this in the audio output settings but it gives no option to change this for the AV cable).

anyone know if it is possible to set the PS3 to output 5.1 so it gets better sound via the speakers

You can only get 5.1 using either the optical or HDMI output.

got an optical in connector on the front bay panel for the sound card (last time i tried it with the 360 i couldnt get it to work) but i'll have a play around with the ps3 see how that works out.

(just need to find the optical cable now lol)
