Well, I've bought a PS3 on impulse and I'm waiting for it to arrive.

I thought I'd have it in the living room and hook it up to the hi-fi too. My question is, can I connect an HDMI cable to the TV for gaming AND plug the supplied AV lead in and connect the audio leads to my amp?

Don't have fancy amp with optical in, you see.

I shouldn't think there will be a problem. You can just go into the system settings to select if you want the sound to go via HDMI or not.

Wouldn't it be easier to run a cable from your TV to the amp for sound?

I will do that otherwise yes. But, routing through the TV will degrade my signal - and I don't want my Chris de Burgh albums to sounded degraded!
