Just put a brand new SSD in my PS3, normally when you put a HDD in it will normally start in a black screen and ask for the system os off a usb device or whatever.

This time though it just went to the home screen, asked to format and it was all done, wondering how the 4.46 update appeared without me putting it on.

Depends on the software version (and console version) I believe.

Let us know how you get on with the SSD, what improvements you see etc.

just a bit of thread revival,

now that the PS store is carrying pretty much all new game content, has anybody seen load time improvements on digital copies of the games?

the old consoles cannot use SSD's effectively, sure it makes some things faster but overall it's a small increase, games coded properly like GTA 5 would see next to no improvement for example because it makes the system read from both the disc and the hard drive at the same time so there's no delay. maybe there may be a point in doing it with next gen, but until someone does some tests there's no point with the current gen from what all reviews have stated.

also lol @ like to have seen ssd's in the new consoles, it would have instantly made the price of the consoles jump by like 50% at least.

sony allow you to upgrade the drive at will so i don't see why they need to supply a £300 console with a £300 hard drive in it, that would be really stupid.

on another note, the hybrid drives are probably the one to go for, so you get the best of everything, speed, size and price.

I also did this last night to try to resolve my console problems was also surprised to see I didn't need the software after sticking the SSD in.

I have PS3 fat (version 2)

hybrid would be the worst to go for on an old console.

Oh joy, it's good to see it's not just Sports Arena where you post hyperbole and mis-informed/made up opinions :)

The PS3 can only read data at a slightly higher rate than the read speeds provided by a HDD. As a result there is very little difference between HDD and SSD despite the large difference in speed if there was no bottleneck reading the data from them.

The thing is he's actually right here, there's 1 or 2 games where you may notice a difference but SSD's in consoles perform nothing like they do on a PC.
