Sorry about the original post - The Mods must have loved that!

Anyho... loads of PS3's available at launch - is this down to bad press, or clever planning by Sony?

They have more stock, theres more PS3s available at launch than there was X360s and Wiis at launch.

Fair point, but the PS3 has been given a fair pasting over the past few months (by myself amoung others)... and Sony's general air of treating its European market as an afterthought has not helped much.

The reason there are more PS3s available is partly down to the staggered launch as anyone who really wanted it, got it from US or Japan, but with 360 launching simultaneously, everyone bought from UK.
Plus the price is putting some people off. And the fact that it is the last console to launch, people have bought the other ones, and don't need to buy this one.

I agree thats 1 thing i hate about Sony they allways leave us last of the bunch for months on end but i do like there consoles.

That's what happened with me. I got tired of the 'bull' Sony were spinning... and I took great offence to the fact that we were the last to get an overpriced consols, that has been stripped down to not offer backwards compatibility.

Add to that, the fact Sony have given the UK more units than most console launches in the past

Half of the problem is that the PS3 seems to offer nothing significant to the casual buyer over the 360.

but i'm sure thats not got anything to do with there being so many units on the shelves, The name itself is selling the units. I know Ps3 won't gain momentum until around 2008, But people who had a playstation, and havent been on forums looking at specs(Most people who aren't tech savvy I would imagine) Will be going for a PS3.

So people buying 360s wont have an impact on the sales? Utter tripe.

Personally its a combination of a lot of things, price, competition, the perceived "let down" consumer have felt and the timing of the launch. People find it hard to justiy big gadget type purchases at this type of year.

i think a large supply, the high RRP, and the time of year its being launched reasons for plentiufl PS3 supply.

As the Sony chap from USA put it "damned if we do and damned if we don't"

(regarding consoles on shelves vs selling out completely).

I've got this impression they've actually sold "plenty" to be content with considering the price. Loads of places around me have stopped taking pre-orders and, looking at some posts here, there is a last minute surrender from some folks who are biting the bullet and getting one.

Can't wait myself. Done Wii and 360 so let's give this a go :D

IMO its a combination of a lot of stock and not wnough peopel wanting them at *** price they are. We get loads of interest in them but a good 70% of peopel say they will wait for it to come down to the 360s price range.

Weel done to Sony for getting the stock out, its probably one fo the best launches ive seen for a console over the last 8 or so years, but its just too expensive and you really have to want one to put yoru hand in your pocket.

Very well said my friend. As I've said before, it's all about justification regards the price.

Yaada yaada cheap Blu-Ray player etc it may be but "some" people don't want that, just a new console with good games.

I though, want the Blu-Ray too so the cost is bearable.

That was the case for all the console manufacturers up until this current generation of releases - only the 360 and Wii have bettered the release timescale of the PS3. And, I bet I'll be able to walk into a shop and buy a PS3 long before I can do the same for the Wii (if I wanted one that is, which I don't ;) EDIT: A PS3 I mean - I would quite like a Wii :()

To answer the OP - I believe ~300,000 PS3's have been made available for the UK launch compared to ~100,000 Wii's and (I think), ~70,000 360's, so of course there will be plenty of PS3's available.
Wii was the fastest selling console, so even if Sony beat this there will still be many, many PS3's available.

Their new TV campaign with the exploding suitcase advert doesn't exactly help either as to those who haven't heard about it on the net I think its quite hard to understand what the advert is actually about? It doesn't say PS3 at the end or anything...
