PS3 stoped playing DVD's

My ps3 has stoped playing dvd's this week.

When I put one in go to video and hit play the screen just stays black and nothing happens?

Games work

Any ideas?

AHHHH not this again:D Ok im gonna have to add this to the sticky now, its to do with the settings on the Ps3 and TV not behaving themselves. Try setting the PS3 output to 576 only and see if that works then try just 720P. Also try turning off the upscaling and trying it.
 
sorry to drag this up again but I treid the above and it still does not work on dvd and blueray

It can see that spiderman bluray is in the box it just goes black once I hit play

There's your problem right there, you need to take the movie OUT of the box and put it in the PS3!

Just tested everything under the sun. Won't even play dvds over the av cable
Out of warrenty but gonna give them a ring at 10 when they open

actually you know what, i dont think it does. looking at the replacement drives that are around, they are all single laser setups, or they might be two diodes in one package sort of thing, but they definately arent two seperate diodes like my laptop drive in my vaio has
 
its knackered. you could try a system reset (hold your finger on the power button at boot) as a clutching at straws last ditch effort, but yup.....sounds like replacement time.

Ok defo laser fault it is, the Ps3 uses 1 laser that can change wavelengths for various media rather than 1 laser for each Disk type. THe whole unit can be had for about £30 on the bay but other sites are approx £40. Cant post site as competitor so have a search for PS3 Laser KES-400AAA. But go the Sony support first of all and see if you can get a replacment for free.
 
right just got off the phone to sony.

Told me to test an audio cd which worked.

Now am being asked to back up and do a full format restore as he thinks its a hardrive problem
 
Problem fix. My 60gb is now playing DVD/ps2/blu-ray woo hooo!!!

summary
Would not play DVD/BR/PS2 games but would play an audio CD

Cause. corrupt hard-drive

Fix a Full restore with Full format not quick
